The schlemiel (clumsy person) spills soup on the schlimazl (unlucky person) and the nebbish (loser) has to clean it up.
Hapless doesn’t work because it’s only an adjective and schlimazl can be used as a noun.
Why wouldn’t you just use the English word “unfortunate” as a noun to translate schlimazl?
