  • a.k.a. Finnish Spitz, a breed of dog "that has been raised for centuries in Finland. Its standard was set in 1812. It is also mentioned in several heroic national songs." Oh dear, this one is too good. Let's see... "The Finnish spitz is an aesthetically pleasing dog with a proud carriage. With its pointed muzzle, erect ears, and reddish coat, it appears something like a cross between a fox and a chow chow.... At one time it was used by Lapp hunters to track polar bears and elk. More recently, it has been used for hunting birds, especially grouse. For this reason, it has earned the nickname 'barking bird dog.' The Finnish spitz is also an excellent house guard. Note: The puppies are delicate at birth and require much care." (Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980)
