  • a pueblo ruins near the Ortiz Mountains where Pueblo Indians mined various ore (lead, and gold) before the first Europeans reached this area in 1540.It is located in the Galisteo Basin. Adolph Bandelier, an early anthropologist, conjectured Galisteo came from the Spanish "I am ignorant" . The name, Galisteo is strikingly similar to the famous Galileo Galilei, who with his telescope was pivotal in searching our ignorance of our surrounds. Galileo's name is perhaps derived from Galilee which roughly means "making circuits or making the rounds" in its aramaic root, galiyl or galiylah .
