Even with so few endemic species, there are two endemic genera, both monotypic: Zygogeomys, represented by the Michoacán pocket gopher (Z. trichopus, EN), and Romerolagus, represented by the zacatuche, or volcano rabbit (R. diazi, EN).
The Volcano rabbit or zacatuche (Romerolagus diazi, EN) is restricted to the central part of the Trans-Volcanic Belt in southern Mexico.
