Prolagus I can see your point, man (man?). This website is a bit weird, sometimes (did you read how to delete a comment on faq?), but if you give it a chance, you will love it, believe me.
Well, too many introductory words. Time to enjoy it! Sep 18, 2008
chained_bear Well, Wordie denizens don't mean to be dense, artbizness, and I don't think anyone here is trying to frustrate you. But it does seem like lots of people log on to Wordie and don't have much trouble figuring it out, after exploring for a few minutes. Like reesetee suggested, perhaps if you give it some time it won't seem so difficult. :) Sep 18, 2008
artbizness @ bilby It's not so much about vast screeds of instructions, FAQ pages, and the like.
What I'm driving at is that at some level it should be intuitive, so that non-computer literate people can use it with ease. I guess it's the old Mac-literate versus PC literate argument again *sigh* Sep 18, 2008
artbizness @ Prolagus I am indeed familiar with the dummies series ;-) Sep 18, 2008
gangerh Oh, and artbizness, I can recommend adding the word schadenfreudgeon to your list. It's not mandatory but you'll feel better. Sep 18, 2008
bilby Roughly speaking, the Wordie ethos is that people learn about list making and commenting by doing, rather than by reading long screeds of instructions. And through being coached by live word-lubbers (there's a pirate thang happening Friday, FYI) rather than impersonal help files. So the encouragement is there to get stuck in and have a go ... there is little that can't be undone.
Pointer: this list is currently an open list, which means anyone can add to it. In fact I just did. If you want to make it a list just for yourself or selected friends, click edit under the list title and set the option you want.
Arrrrrrrrrrr! Sep 18, 2008
Prolagus I hope you know the "for dummies" book series, otherwise it may sound not-so-nicely disrespectful. :-) Welcome to Wordie and don't forget to have fun! Sep 18, 2008
artbizness LOL @Prolagus Very funny. I shall be reading and adding to it profusely. Sep 18, 2008
gangerh If you see a word or a list and need time to reflect and comment then you could simply add to favourites. It'll sit on your profile until you're ready. Sep 18, 2008
Prolagus It's probably time for it: Wordie for dummies! Sep 18, 2008
chained_bear Well, there is an faq page, just like there's a page for every other word on the site. Plenty for all!
I'm not sure it's as clumsy as you think at first glance, though. Not to argue, but just to reassure you... It's really just words. You make a list, you add words to it, and you click around and look at other people's words and lists. And if you want to comment, you can. Or you could just read and list your own stuff. Etc. I'm not sure how the interface could be any less clumsy or cluttered, to be honest with you.
But welcome, and enjoy yourself! Sep 18, 2008
artbizness I see what you're saying, but the problem for me is that the interface is clumsy and gets in the way of the reason for the website's existence - to play with words.
I know very little about coding (as you can see from my efforts to make a simple word link under mokusatsu earlier), but it would be much more fun if everything was on one homepage. As it is, I'm still thinking: "Now where was it I saw that word/feature/list/etc/." instead of being able to make the comment or add (which I've usually forgotten by the time I've got to where I wanted to go). That's quite important for people who need time to reflect on things before they comment.
An FAQ page is a pretty basic requirement of every website I've ever come across though, so I'm not sure what I think about that.. Sep 18, 2008
reesetee C_b's right--Wordie is more organic than most. The FAQ page wasn't designed to be a specific page linked to the home page; nor was the features page. They evolved out of a general need to keep related information together. A basic search for the word (upper right) will bring you right there. Also, once you're on the page you want, you could use CTRL+F (or whatever other "find" function you have at your fingertips) to search for a specific word or topic. That's what I do, anyway. :-)
And once you get your bearings and you see something you really think Wordie ought to have, you can always ask John about it (usually done on features). Sep 18, 2008
chained_bear Well, artbizness, that's the beauty of Wordie. Since it's about words, and only words (not HTML coding, not links, not images, not sentences, etc.), it's labyrinthine because everything's on different word pages. The faq page was created to try to help new folks figure out the structure of the site--which is really pretty simple: Make lists. Enter words. Comment on them.
It isn't a big deal. Everyone on Wordie has the freedom to use the site as he/she wishes. Hope you have a great time and stick around. :) Sep 18, 2008
bilby I'm glad you added labyrinthine. Sep 18, 2008
artbizness Hmm.. The problem is I'm scrolling through a whole page of info to find the one thing that I want.
Also - can't see FAQ on the home page or my list page. Everything needs to be grouped on one page for ease of access. It's too labyrinthine at the moment. Sep 18, 2008
reesetee Ah, you'll catch on. You might also want to check on the page for FAQ. Pro has been compiling some Q&As there. :-) Sep 18, 2008
artbizness OK. Blimey it's a lot to learn!
It's not like Twitter or Plurk...! Sep 18, 2008
chained_bear Also, artbizness, if you wanted to add your first comment on this page (below) to the list description, you could click on "edit list" up at the top and then you'll get the right screen. :)
Welcome to Wordie! Sep 18, 2008
bilby Comments can be on lists, on profiles or on words. If you want to comment on spatchcock, for example, first click on it to bring up the word page. Sep 18, 2008
artbizness I'm not getting the hang of this... Sep 18, 2008
artbizness This will also be the title of my first compilation of poetry. Sep 18, 2008
