  1. n. A sacred bull of the ancient Egyptians, acting as an intermediary between Ptah and humans.

  1. n. A genus of melliferous or anthophilous aculeate hymenopterous insects, the type of family Apidœ and of the suborder Mellifera or Anthophila; the hive-bees. The genus was formerly coextensive with these groups, but is now by successive detachments of other genera limited to the hive-bee (Apis mellifica) and its immediate relatives. See bee, and cut under Apidœ.
  2. n. The sacred bull of the ancient Egyptians, to which divine honors were paid. The bull sought out by the priests for this purpose was required to be black with a triangular white spot on the forehead, and with numerous other marks which denoted the true Apis.
  3. n. A small southern constellation situated between the Cross and the Chameleon. Same as Musca.
