pterodactyl I just spotted this on the Wordnik Twitter feed: http://m.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/04/screamer-slammer-bang-and-15-other-ways-to-say-exclamation-point/274687/ Apr 6, 2013
ry exclamation point is definitely more common here in California. I couldn't speak for all the hill people, desert dwellers and fancy-pants east coasters around. I say we squash the beef and all start calling it the ecphoneme! (found that in an unretraceable "Related Words" meander from here).
Also, it looks like frogapplause as well feels somewhat strongly about this phrasing!!! Apr 5, 2013
ruzuzu I've heard (probably in that Lynn Truss Eats, Shoots & Leaves book) that exclamation point is more common in America. I like saying exclamation mark because then it's more like question mark. But that could just be me being fussy. Apr 4, 2013
pterodactyl I opted for "exclamation mark" over "exclamation point" on the grounds that the symbol in question is more than just a point -- it's a point with a vertical line over it. But that's just me being fussy. Is there some more reasonable reason to choose "exclamation mark"? Apr 4, 2013
ruzuzu I wholeheartedly agree. I also wanted to add how nice it was to see these comments here instead of on exclamation point. Apr 3, 2013
ry I find myself agreeing with pterodactyl. There is something irksome about two or four bangs.
...also, gotta love these algorithms—America is listed as a synonym above. Apr 3, 2013
pterodactyl I don't usually use more than one exclamation mark, but when I do, I use an odd number of them!!! For example, three exclamation marks, or five!!!!! Or even seven, if I'm feeling particularly maniacal!!!!!!!
For some reason, an even number of exclamation marks just looks wrong!! Apr 2, 2013
