Definitions

Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia

  1. n. The doctrine that in the person of Christ there are but one will and one energy or operation; opposed to the orthodox doctrine (dyothelism) that since the incarnation Christ has two distinct wills, the divine and the human, and two distinct but harmonious operations. The Monothelites argued that his will must be one, will being attached to personality. The orthodox urged that there must be two wills in him, as otherwise either the divine or the human nature would be imperfect, and cited the texts Mat. xxvi. 42; Luke xxii. 42; John v. 30, vi. 38. See Monothelite. Also Monotheletism. Monothelism.
