  1. Artificial short-staple wool formed by tearing to pieces and disintegrating old woolen fabrics, as old clothes. The cloth made from it when mixed with a little fresh wool has a fine warm appearance, but from the shortness of the fiber is weak and tender. See shoddy.
  2. An East Indian plant, Ophiorhiza Mungos, whose roots are a reputed cure for snake-bites. See mongoos.

Etymologies (2)

Toggle Century etymologies Century Dictionary (2)

  1. Perhaps from *mung, mong, mang, a mixture, as in mongcorn, mungcorn. But the termination, in this view, is not explained. The early history is not known. Some conjecture that the word is due to a proper name, Mungo. This is a Scots name.
  2. Cf. New Latin Mungos, the specific name of the plant: see Mungos.
