The creamy pink worms have tiny, fleshy, almost leglike projections called parapodia, which function during movement and respiration, said Stetson Everett of Eastern Sea Worm Co. in Hancock.
Some polychaetes such as the sea mouse Aphrodite aculeate also bear a ventral muscular, creeping sole; myzostomids have a circular body with fused parapodia, which also forms a ventral foot like structure.
The unpaired fins of fish were originally paired and possibly arose from the coalescence of rows of parapodia.
