  • Having only one beat: noting valves which have a single bearing-surface or seat, as ordinary lifting-valves: distinguished from double-beat valves, which have two seats, so that they may be in equilibrium of pressures above one face and below the other. Cornish valves and most puppet-valves for large engines are double-beat. Check-valves of small area are single-beat.
