Prolagus Can the explanation on the Online Etymology Dictionary page help? Jan 27, 2009
sionnach If I understand that second Weirdnet definition correctly, then it's always Tuesday somewhere in the world.
So, Saturday is named for Saturn.
Sunday is named for the sun.
Monday is named for the moon.
Tuesday, in Romance languages, is named for Mars.
Wednesday, in Romance languages, is named for Mercury; in English and Scandinavian for Odin, or Wotan. In German it's just 'midweek'.
Thursday: Thor in northern Europe; Jupiter (Jove) on the mediterranean.
Friday: northern Europe, Freya; Mediterranean, Venus
These correspondences seem less than perfect to me - wouldn't Loki be a closer Norse version of mercury than Wotan?
But my real question is "where does the 'chew' in Tuesday come from"? Jan 27, 2009
