Seems to me most plural islands are easy come easy coconut on the article. Solomon Islands, the Solomon Islands, Cocos Islands, the Cocos Islands.

I don't think they really are though - would you really say 'I'm going on holiday to Solomon Islands'? Maybe one would, I suppose. But 'I've just bought a house in (the) Ukraine' or 'Didier Drogba is the best-loved footballer in/of/who plays for (the) Ivory Coast'.

How do you feel about subnational entities, such as territories? The territory formally known as the Yukon is now (usually) just Yukon.

Actually my bad ... should be Vunibobo. Double Naughty Chair as he was from Fiji not Solomons. Recently retired as Fiji's Ambassador to UN in fact. See original anecdote on berenado vinibobo.
