  • dontcry My husband and children are constantly creating homages to Dali around the house - although they don't even realize it. I often come home to "Persistence of Afghan, Gym Sock, and Newspaper." Even the dog gets into the act sometimes by laying half on and half off of her bed, with her head flopped over the back of it. Problem is, I'm not a fan of this particular form of performance art... Aug 17, 2010

  • ruzuzu My elementary school was so small that we didn't have a proper kitchen or cafeteria. Every day, one of the teachers would pick up a couple of containers full of food for us from the main school over in the county seat, which was about 20 minutes away. The sixth graders, as our elders, had the coveted duty of trading off as "servers" for the rest of the students. Every day, two of the sixth graders left class early and went to the stage next to the gym in order to ready the styrofoam plates and sporks and take the foil off the goulash, or pigs-in-a-blanket, or chili (with cinnamon rolls). Every day, while we were waiting to go play in the gym ("Do not jump off the stage. Use the stairs!"), I would arrange my empty milk container, my used napkin, and my dirty spork onto my plate in some sort of artistic display. Then I'd title it. "What is it today?" my friends would ask. "I call this one 'Self-Portrait with Spork.'" And every day, when the time came, I'd reluctantly throw it all in the garbage. Aug 17, 2010

  • bilby I'm listing them purely for the suggestiveness of the language. Hence the list is a kind of gallery where the names of paintings are displayed rather than the paintings themselves, a tribute to the wordcraft of the titles. Apr 27, 2008
