Egg freezing is more technically known as oocyte cryopreservation, a technology by which a woman's eggs are surgically removed from her ovaries and frozen until she is ready to use them.
A unique look into laboratory techniques for egg freezing, also known as oocyte cyropreservation.
What inspired him to take on this challenge was his research on how hormones control critical ovarian functions in mice, such as oocyte maturation and ovulation.
It might also have a place in other assisted reproductive techniques such as oocyte transfer and gamete intrafallopian transfer (combining eggs and sperm outside the body, then placing them in the fallopian tubes to achieve fertilization), he said.
Reproductive Sciences at Yale, said: "When a woman undergoes in vitro fertilisation, she receives medication called Follicle Stimulating Hormone to produce more than one oocyte, which is the normal production each month.
Title: Prevention of maternal aging-associated oocyte aneuploidy and meiotic spindle defects in mice by dietary and genetic strategies
The study also identified a gene that regulates oocyte quality.
And most of us have probably ingested meat and dairy products from livestock cloned by natural reproduction (monozygotic siblings), mechanical embryo-splitting or even nuclear transfer from an embryonic donor cell into an enucleated oocyte.
Embryo freezing and oocyte freezing require ovarian stimulation at diagnosis and are not appropriate for prepubertal girls or when delaying cancer therapy is not an option.
I desperately wish that the relatively new technology of oocyte cryopreservation would become more affordable and accessible because the decision to delay motherhood has given me more peace of mind than any choice I've ever made.
