ruzuzu Sometimes it's nice to know I'm not alone. Thank you, skipvia. Feb 28, 2011
fbharjo All the more reason for a Southern season with a reason! Viva la deftyrance! Feb 28, 2011
skipvia Brang and brung are pretty much interchangeable, as in "It was brung up yesterday" and "It was brang up yesterday." No diffyraunce. Feb 28, 2011
fbharjo Darn tootin', I'all shootin', Wye Ile beaten' biscuits for shure (shore). My father grew up on the Eastern shure (Shore) before the West (rest). What has become of brang and brung? Feb 28, 2011
ruzuzu Any thoughts on brang and brung? Feb 28, 2011
skipvia "Fixin' to" goes straight to the list, w42. Bless your heart. Jun 20, 2009
wordlover42 What about "fixin' to"? Jun 20, 2009
skipvia Good point, oroboros, at least in some parts of the South. Nov 20, 2007
oroboros Shouldn't that be et up? Nov 20, 2007
skipvia How very genteel of you, c_b, and how very appropriate for this list.
You might also hear someone say "That Maola Braxton, bless her heart, is plumb eat up with the dumbass." Nov 20, 2007
chained_bear Suggestion, skipvia: bless your heart. In my experience, southerners say "bless his (or her) heart" when a yankee would more likely say, "the asshole." For example, "That older gentleman who lives next door, bless his heart, he's temperamental about the kids making noise." Nov 20, 2007
reesetee Sionnach, are you sure you're not confusing grad school with a Faulkner novel you read? ;-) Oct 30, 2007
chained_bear "I fail to see how that's particularly unusual among graduate school departments," she sniffed delightedly. Oct 30, 2007
skipvia Well, I swan... Oct 30, 2007
sionnach c_b: It was in mathematical statistics (as opposed to biostatistics). A seriously messed up department, complete with psychopathological faculty members, a long-simmering rift which split the faculty down the middle, a dark mysterious secret (the suicide by gunshot of a former chairman in the faculty lounge) and a long-established tradition of mistreating the graduate students.
Ah, good times! Oct 30, 2007
chained_bear What was the grad program in, if you don't mind saying, sionnach? Signed, nearly went there for grad school for history. Oct 29, 2007
sionnach Hmmm. Somehow an earlier answer never made it on to this thread. I lived in Chapel Hill from 1979 to 1984, when I first came to the U.S. to go to graduate school. Fond memories of the town, of the graduate program, not so much. Oct 29, 2007
reesetee Probably wouldn't, skipvia--and this was less than 10 years ago. I wouldn't recognize where I live now from 10 years ago, to tell the truth. Oct 29, 2007
chained_bear Sadly, that's true of many places in the United States these days.
I guess it isn't sad in the sense that if a place is changing that much, it's got a pretty good economy. But it is true that a lot of towns are unrecognizable from what they were just a decade or a dozen years ago. Oct 29, 2007
skipvia I'm afraid you wouldn't recognize Chapel Hill anymore, reesetee. Oct 29, 2007
reesetee You guys are Chapel Hillians? One of my best pals lived there fresh from getting her Ph.D. Loved the place when I visited. She's long gone from NC, unfortunately (for me). Oct 28, 2007
skipvia I remember when A Southern Season opened in a small store in the Eastgate Shopping Center in Chapel Hill. I'm from Chapel Hill, and it's where I got the idea for the list name. It's still there, as you discovered, only much larger and yuppified. Still a nice place, though. Oct 28, 2007
sionnach There used to be a gourmet food store in Chapel Hill called A Southern Season. I wonder if it's still there?
(googles furiously) .. why, yes it is. All 60,000 square feet of it. Comforting to know that someone is catering adequately to the epicurean desires of triangle area residents. Oct 28, 2007
chained_bear Also, reesetee... Let it be said--squirrel *is* probably best eaten with the skin removed. Skinful squirrel is probably really awful. Oct 28, 2007
skipvia I think Palooka meant skrinked squirrel. Does that make you feel any better? :) Oct 28, 2007
reesetee Palooka--skinned squirrel? Excuse me, but.... *bleccch* Oct 28, 2007
skipvia That takes me home, c_b. "Surprise" is another one that is more commonly pronounced with an accented first syllable. Oct 28, 2007
skipvia Or passable fare... Oct 28, 2007
chained_bear I think of insurance and umbrella as southern words, if you pronounce them with the accent on the first syllable, but they're not particularly southern (only the pronunciation). Oct 27, 2007
palooka You haven't eaten until you've had skinned squirrel smothered with fried green tomatoes. It's more than passable fair! Oct 27, 2007
rocksinmypockets Road trip!! Oct 27, 2007
skipvia I just noticed how many of these words refer to food. Hmmm... Oct 27, 2007
reesetee Great list! I feel warmer already. Oct 27, 2007
