abraxaszugzwang I already have a list for "painful tags," but this particular prejudice has recently been discussed and I thought I'd start my own list. I'm always hesitant to list controversial terms for fear of backlash . . . but I'm also of the mind that ignoring something doesn't make it go away.
I'm not sure what would lessen the impact of certain slurs. I've said before that I don't think trying to make an insult yours (as with nigger and fag) works. I suppose it's just better education and, possibly, the dismissing of terms as jokey that would help, though plenty of people contend that that's dangerous in itself.
I'll leave you with a favorite line of mine from the movie "Velvet Goldmine." It goes something like this:
