A genus of discifloral polypetalous trees and shrubs, commonly known as maples, of the natural order Sapindaceæ, suborder Acerineæ, having opposite simple leaves and the fruit a double-winged samara. It includes about 50 species, of northern temperate regions, many of them valuable timber-trees or widely cultivated for shade and ornament. Sugar is obtained in America from the sap of A. saccharinum, the sugar-maple. See

hernesheir Formerly the maple trees were placed in the family Aceraceae by northern-hemisphere botanists. As plant collecting and genetic research moved into the more diverse tropics, it was noticed that the characteristic helicopter half-fruits, (keys) were also present in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae) which includes many tropical vines. Now we know that the maples belong in the Sapindaceae with the many many more diverse subtropical and tropical species. Wow, jumping from one huge family to another. Aug 28, 2009
