- n. A nematognathous fish, Malapterurus electricus, inhabiting the Nile; the electric catfish. It reaches a length of 3 to 4 feet, and gives a sharp galvanic shock on being touched.
- n. A council; specifically, as an abbreviation of volksraad, a legislative assembly.
