Definitions

Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia

  1. n. A basket-hilted broadsword of the seventeenth century. In many collections these weapons are known as claymores, from their resemblance to the broadswords popular in Scotland in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and erroneously called claymore in imitation of the old two-handed sword which properly bears that name. See claymore and basket-hilt.
