  • Aviation term. Also: "missed approach". When an instrument approach is made in low-visibility conditions, say, thick fog, and the runway environment is not seen by the pilots when the descent to land can go no lower, a go-around (GA)is accomplished. GAs can occur for many other reasons, all, in essence, because of an unsafe condition (e.g., another aircraft already on the runway; misalignment with the runway; airspeed out of limits, some malfunction of required aircraft equipment, et al.).
