Long English words that can be typed on a keyboard under various restictions. The longest are:

QWERTY left hand only: aftercataracts, sweaterdresses, tesseradecades, and tetrastearates; right hand only: monimolimnion, phyllophyllin, johnny-jump-up; alternating hands: antiskepticism and leucocytozoans; top row of letters only: powertripper, protopottery, teetertotter, uropyoureter, middle row only: Shakalshas (plural of Shakalsha, apparently has not been used in English except as a typewriter word, but is listed in MW3).

DVORAK: left hand only: epopoeia, jipijapa, peekapoo, quiaquia; right hand only: crwth; alternating hands: photomorphogenesis.

  • yarb Re: longest words in which the letters alternate hands on the keyboard. There's a French footballer called Makelele - which I'm sure is nowhere near the longest but nonetheless feels orgasmic to type fast. Like a stampede! Apr 8, 2008

  • chained_bear Here, try this URL. It's a Flash game and, I just noticed, allows you to play in English, Italian, or another language I believe is Polish...? (I'm not a good judge of flags.)

    Edit: Mollusque, the reason I thought of this game is that it's a six-minute series of smaller games, and some of them are all words for the left hand, or all words for the right hand, or alternate, etc. They aren't very long words, usually, but they're fun. Apr 7, 2008

    C_b, I never heard of fingerjig, but it sounds like fun. How do you play it? I mean, you know...if you're not a bear?

  • chained_bear One paw typing makes the same clicky noises as two. My claws happen to be retractable, yes, and are made of adamantine. For this reason, I have to be careful about not chipping my red nail polish.

    Has anyone played fingerjig, besides me, I mean? I looked for the URL but couldn't find it--it's google-able though. It's a typing game and great fun. Wait... Maybe I first heard of it on Wordie and I just forgot. Apr 7, 2008

  • Prolagus I guess this problem in finding Dvorak single hand long words means the Dvorak layout is a success, considered that alternating between hands was among its main aims. Apr 7, 2008
