Coffee has been in the news recently; several long-term studies have concluded coffee almost certainly helps prevent type 2 diabetes, liver disease, basal cell carcinoma and possibly Parkinson’s. (You still decrease your cardiovascular health if you drink a lot of coffee with cream though).

I'm not listing coffee bean types here, so no need to add peaberry, kona, blue mountain, yirgacheffe, etc. :) However please feel free to add any and all coffee and other caffeine sources.

  • bilby You could have a topi gelas for your gelas kopi (coffee glass), hence the unwieldy though legitimate noun stack topi gelas gelas kopi, a coffee glass lid. A kopi topi could be, uhh, coffee served in a hat. Or maybe that tasted like hats. Or, paragonning Mister Civet, coffee excreted by hats. Jan 24, 2013

    In my poking around today, several times I saw the phrase coffee liqueur used as though it is the regular descriptor for that class of drinks, so...I'm not sure. caffè Borghetti is a thing. Jan 24, 2013

  • bilby In Indonesia it's not a term used to refer to preparation. I haven't heard it used elsewhere. I guess it's possible some hip coffee bar is offering kopi jawa which is ??whatever?? Indonesian coffee served 'Javanese style' thick and sweet.

    On another note, is there a generic name for coffee liqueurs or only brand names like Borghetti? Jan 24, 2013

  • ry I added kopi luwak but it's unclear whether kopi jawa is not also a style of preparation (in addition to generically referring to Javanese coffee). Jan 24, 2013

  • bilby Yes you can say you're drinking kopi luwak. Although in an Indonesian sense that would mean you're having coffee in the standard way, i.e. a tablespoon of grounds in a tall glass, 2 tablespoons of sugar and boiling water to fill the glass. And a little tin lid to keep it warm, the topi gelas (glass hat).

  • bilby As an aside, I can note that Indonesians often tell me that inferior coffees have corn mixed in when being ground. The filler brings the price down and makes this kind of coffee affordable for the country's poor people. Most of the quality coffee on the other hand is sold off for hard currency.
    Although I've drunk the corn mix coffee (in Jakarta), I can't remember a specific name for it. Perhaps we can call it kopi Nebraska? Jan 24, 2013

  • bilby Javanese coffee. In that sense Java is just a location tag and has no other meaning attached to it. The favoured coffees of Indonesia are generally considered to be kopi Lampung (a province at the southern tip of Sumatra), kopi Jawa, kopi Bali (less so these days, not much coffee growing going on any more) and kopi Toraja (the highland region within the province of South Sulawesi). I could add kopi Timor, noting that half of Timor is now an independent country and arguably the best coffee appears to come from said East Timor and not Indonesian West Timor. Jan 24, 2013

  • ry Oh I see, clever boots. Specific preparations, yes. Avoiding straight synonyms for coffee. I was thinking about chocolate coated espresso beans, yeah, anything you find like that seems cool.

    So monsignor bilby, my question is can you say "I'm drinking kopi luwak (god help me)?" or must you say "I'm drinking coffee made from kopi luwak (when will this nightmare be over)." Jan 24, 2013

  • alexz I found when making a big list, if you look up a generic word such as 'tea' or 'snow' , and then hit the 'reverse dictionary' link, it will result in a bunch of words you didn't expect to get.
    You'll find your word search take some branches you didn't expect to get, such as scientific uses, solids instead of liquid, etc.

    Are you looking for specific common words? Are you excluding archaic words?

  • bilby Kopi luwak refers to the end product, or rather the product of the end, i.e. after civetisation. Before that it's just kopi. At least at home on the range in Indonesia that's the case. Jan 24, 2013

  • ry alexz! Thanks for your additions. Mountain Dew, Pepsi and Coke all have caffeine, but soda, pop and soda pop are words describing any soft drink regardless of caffeinatedness, so maybe those shouldn't go here. Jan 24, 2013

  • ry hmm good point, I don't know. Basically what I want here is names of specific drinks and possibly methods/accoutrements of brewing. So unless someone starts feeding civets coffee grounds and then getting them to drink a lot of water... Jan 24, 2013
