bilby As lists evolve the priorities change. All of your suggestions are interesting enough to list, at least to me :-) Thanks rolig! Dec 30, 2007
rolig Then there are the Gagauz in Moldova, Turkic minority who are, unlike most Turkic peoples, not Muslims but Christians (Eastern Orthodox and Protestant). But this is probably more an ethnonym than a demonym. Dec 29, 2007
rolig Now here's something surprising: someone from Botswana is a Motswana, unless they are more than one; then they are Batswana (with an a not an o in the first syllable. Dec 29, 2007
rolig And of course when the Acadians moved to Louisiana, they became Cajuns. Dec 29, 2007
skipvia I'm an esteroid--a resident of Ester, Alaska. Dec 27, 2007
rolig Gosh, thanks, bilby! But I like your Ljube-job suggestion, too. Another suggestion for the demonym of my city would be to pronounce the j the English way and call us L'jubilants. Dec 27, 2007
asativum Most people consider residents of Arkansas (USA) to be Arkansans, but for a time there was a minority push by some there to use Arkansawyer.
Arkie is, perhaps, a term of endearment ordisdain, no doubt kin to the dustbowl-era Okie. Dec 27, 2007
bilby I'd be delighted if there were 101 people in the parish at Chalmette.
I like rolig's suggestion of Ljubljanchan which is both colourful and genuine. Better than my Ljube-Job ;-) Lett makes sense as the name of this country is Lettonia in Italian and the people are lettone, which unfortunately also means 'big bed'.
Sooite is also a gorgeous word. Thanks for all the suggestions.

sionnach Further suggestions:
Oxonian for a native of Oxford. Lancastrian for a native of Lancashire. Sooite for a resident of Sault Ste. Marie. Trifluvien for a resident of Trois-Rivières. Dec 27, 2007
rolig The jury's still out when it comes to a demonym for Ljubljana residents. If you go by the old German name of the city, then we are Laibachers, but that is very retro, to say the least. My suggestion (which has been adopted to some degree on one Slovene journalist's English-language blog) is Ljubljanchan, which is close to the Slovene word for a male Ljubljana resident, Ljubljan?an (a female is a Ljubljan?anka. Other possibilities seen occasionally are Ljubljanian and Ljubljaner, but nothing is official yet.
As for citizens of Slovenia, the English world is divided between Slovene (my preference) and Slovenian. As for neighboring countries, don't forget the Croats, who lent their ethnonym to your cravat, or the Bosniacs, from the autonym Bošnjak, which refers not to Bosnians in general but specifically to Bosnian Muslims.
A bit further afield, you might note the Letts, an old-fashioned name for the Latvians, and the Walloons, the French-speaking Belgians. A related demonym, back in Southeastern Europe, is Vlach (hence the region Wallachia, in Romania), for the indigenous people of Romania and Moldova. Both these exonyms are, by the way, cousins to the name for the people who come from Cymru. Dec 27, 2007
colleen in New Orleans, folks from St. Bernard parish, specifically Chalmette, are called chalmations. Dec 27, 2007
