andrea7097 receipt has a silent "p" Aug 16, 2012
ruzuzu Doesn't Chained_Bear owe you some sort of usage pfee for all of these silent P's? Nov 3, 2010
pterodactyl Hey, I resemble that remark. Nov 3, 2010
Prolagus Yes, pdefinitely! Nov 22, 2008
zuccaciyecioglu It's not at the beginning, but how about raspberry? I mean, c'mon. That's awesome. Nov 22, 2008
Prolagus Ptisan :-) Jun 24, 2008
bilby How about soundproof toilet? May 10, 2008
gangerh If a P falls over in the forest and there is no one there to hear it does it make a sound? Feb 28, 2008
gangerh psychedelic? Feb 28, 2008
sarra ph combinations ought not to count, as if the p really were silent then the word would begin with an h sound—which none of them do. The ph can be dropped as a whole though, I've just found out.
I'd pronounce the initial p in the German words. Feb 27, 2008
vega Great list! There's also phthisis and psionic. Feb 27, 2008
bilby Reminds me of that old sign:
WELCOME TO OUR SWIMMING OOL. IT HAS NO 'P' IN IT AND WE'D LIKE TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.

chained_bear Good question. The OED. But they're British so they say lots of things wrong. :) Here, I'll put them back. Feb 4, 2007
reesetee Odd. In the eyeball world, the p is pronounced in neither word (pterygium or ptosis). Where are you seeing that they're pronounced? Feb 3, 2007
chained_bear Well, I looked up the pronunciation of ptosis, and apparently the p is supposed to be pronounced! So while it's a cool word, it doesn't belong on this list. More's the pity. :(
Same with pterygium.
Of course I found this out AFTER I added a citation... Ergh... Feb 3, 2007
reesetee Oooh. One more: pterygium. Feb 2, 2007
reesetee ...and ptosis Feb 2, 2007
chained_bear Thanks Abraxas! I was hoping to add to this list as I came across stuff, but you've saved me some time. Feb 2, 2007
abraxaszugzwang how about the x-men character psylocke? Then there's pterodactyl, psalm, pseudonym, Ptolemaic, and, of course, the variations on psyche Feb 2, 2007
