marky cool list! Jun 28, 2011
reesetee That's...highly descriptive, bilby. Thanks. Apr 16, 2011
bilby pwdr sêr, see Wikipedia entry. German term sternenrotz - star snot - refers to the same thing. Other terms listed there. Apr 16, 2011
reesetee As I always say, my lists are works in progress. If it's not there, it'll likely be added at some point. :-) Thanks, h!
Edit: While looking for photos of hernesheir's effects, I found this site. Great images and good explanations for many of these phenomena. Feb 3, 2010
hernesheir These are other halo effects caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere refracting sunlight: sun pillar, Parry arc, upper (and lower) tangent arc, circumhorizon(tal) arc, circumscribed halo, parhelic circle, circumzenithal arc. Quite a few more types have been described and photographed. Feb 2, 2010
reesetee Thanks! Feb 2, 2010
ruzuzu Kelvin–Helmholtz wave clouds. Feb 2, 2010
reesetee Thanks, oroboros! I replaced that link--should work now. Will also add pilot's halo. Jan 23, 2010
oroboros Reesetee, your link on green sun is broken. I notice that pilot's halo isn't on the list. Recommended. Jan 23, 2010
reesetee Nifty! Thanks, bilby! Sep 14, 2009
bilby Morning glory, mebbe. Sep 14, 2009
reesetee Fascinating. Thanks! Jul 22, 2009
bilby Moilanen arc. See here. Jul 22, 2009
reesetee Thanks, bilby! Nov 17, 2008
bilby belt of Venus. I came across it on this page. Nov 17, 2008
reesetee *groan*
No, uh...I think I'll pass on adding that one to this list. ;-) Oct 23, 2008
chained_bear Reesetee, this probably doesn't contain any useful terms for your list, but you should see it anyway. Oct 23, 2008
reesetee Sure. Added--in your honor. :-) Oct 17, 2008
frindley I'd like to propose fur rain as being especially appropriate for this list. Oct 17, 2008
reesetee Yes, I love that word--it's on my Fanciful Beasts list. :-) Oct 16, 2008
chained_bear There are firedogs too, but those aren't weather-related. Oct 16, 2008
bilby Was my wishful thinking :-( We only have sunburntdogs here. Oct 16, 2008
reesetee I can't say I agree, but not to worry--these aren't cats and dogs. :-)
Snowdog? I haven't heard of that one. Oct 16, 2008
bilby Buggle, I did a page search on snowdog and nothing came up so I popped it up there. Got me thinking though of a potential list of -dog derivatives. But seeing as I detest the pests ... Oct 16, 2008
reesetee Already listed, bilby--only as two words. Thanks, though. :-) Oct 16, 2008
bilby sundog Oct 16, 2008
reesetee Never! :-) Sep 23, 2007
palooka You don't have to worry about stepping on my Wordie toes reesetee - I'm the expert at stepping on other people's toes including yours! Sep 23, 2007
reesetee Thanks, trivet! Sorry--no, slithering rocks aren't precipitation. Added some of these late last night and forgot to explain them. All fixed now on its own page. :-) Sep 23, 2007
trivet Reesetee, this is lovely - slithering rocks, especially!
Are they some kind of precipitation? Sep 23, 2007
reesetee Thanks, palooka! I have thundersnow already listed. And isn't "gully washer" just a colorful term for a heavy rainstorm?
Ooh! I just remembered that you have your own "Wild Weather" list! Hope I haven't stepped on your Wordie toes! :-) Sep 23, 2007
palooka A great topic with an abundance of colorful phrases: sheet lightning, thunder snow, squall lines, gully washers, staccato lightning, etc. Sep 23, 2007
