  1. from New Latin Amazona, a genus of birds: so called from the great river Amazon, Portuguese Rio das Amazonas, Spanish Rio de las Amazonas, French le fleuve des Amazones, German der Amazonenfluss, etc., literally the river of the Amazons, in allusion to the supposed female warriors said to have been seen on its banks by the Spaniards.
