(Norman) peufe, also Old French pelfre, peufre, French dial. peufre, spoil, frippery; Cf pelfrer, pelfer, pelfir, also pilfeier, despoil, pillage; apparently connected with piller, rob (later English pill), but the second syllable is not explained. Cf. pelfry, pilfer.
