actung catching up with the comments now.
gaiters, yes. spatterdashes, yes, spats, no (getting too much into shoe territory). leg warmers, yes. smallclothes, according to the Wordnik definitions, yes.
again all as per the "made up rules in my head." and how that would look as a list, i have no idea! i'll have to think on that.
ditto re: chained_bear's re-enactor clothes-wearing days!

yarb "Brief days"! Ha, ha, ha. Jan 4, 2011
ruzuzu *totally wants to ask about chained_bear's brief days wearing re-enactor clothes* Jan 4, 2011
yarb Sentences you only see on Wordnik, no. 96:
"Ah. I was operating on the older definition of smallclothes..." Jan 4, 2011
chained_bear Ah. I was operating on the older definition of smallclothes, meaning anything worn under the outer garments, which would include (for example) a woman's shift and a man's long shirt (long enough that the shirttails covered the crotchal area and almost down to the knees). I know from my very brief days wearing re-enactor clothes (don't ask) that "smallclothes" meant (means?) the whites that go under one's regimental coat, so obviously that could include the close-fitting knee breeches aforesaid. Jan 4, 2011
ruzuzu Sure... but, for example, the Century Dictionary has this definition: "Knee-breeches, as distinguished from pantaloons and trousers; especially, the close-fitting knee-breeches of the eighteenth century. Also short clothes and smalls."
Jan 4, 2011
chained_bear Not all smallclothes are worn below the belt, however. Jan 4, 2011
ruzuzu Ha.
In the meantime, I'd like to propose the word smallclothes for inclusion on this list. Jan 3, 2011
chained_bear Oh, I already have a couple lists about the crotchal area.
Wait... that's not what you meant. Jan 3, 2011
ruzuzu Fine, hernesheir. In that case, I nominate actung and/or chained_bear.
Edit: or that TSA official. Jan 3, 2011
chained_bear gaiters? spatterdashes? or their shortened version, spats? legwarmers?
Of course all these don't involve what a TSA official recently called "the crotchal area," so I could see if they don't fit those made-up rules in your head. Jan 3, 2011
bilby nappy. chained_bear would surely suggest hamcases. Dec 30, 2010
hernesheir I love the concept of *"made-up" rules in my head*, and I applaud you for having them and sticking by them! Somewhere, there is a list out there named "Made-up Rules in my Head".
(Please don't nominate me to start it, ruzuzu.) Dec 30, 2010
ruzuzu How about riding skirt? Dec 30, 2010
actung oh wait, but a sporran seems more like an accessory. according to the made-up rules in my head, i was thinking more stand-alone pieces (of which the merkin and codpiece surely are). :) Dec 30, 2010
actung ha! sure, why not? Dec 30, 2010
hernesheir merkin, codpiece, sporran? Dec 30, 2010
