  1. Middle English bagage, from Old French bague, bundle, perhaps of Germanic origin. Sense 4, perhaps from French bagasse, from Provençal bagassa, ultimately from Arabic baġīy, prostitute, from baġā, to fornicate; see bġy in Semitic roots.

  1. from Middle English baggage, bagage, from Old French bagage, baggage, especially of an army, also the baggage-train, including the attendants, modern F. bagage, baggage (= Provencal bagatge = Spanish bagage, baggage, especially of an army, a beast of burden, formerly also refuse, lumber, trash, = Portuguese bagagem, baggage, carriage; cf. Italian bagaglia, bagaglie, baggage), from Old French baguer, tie up, pack up, truss up (modern F. baguer, baste), from bague, a bundle, pack, usually in plural bagues, baggage, belongings: see bag and -age. Cf. baggage.
  2. Prob. a particular use of baggage in sense 3; but the form and sense agree closely with F. bagasse, strumpet, also bajasse, baiasse = Provencal baguassa, prob. from Spanish bagasa (obsolete) = Portuguese bagaxa = Italian bagascia, a strumpet; of uncertain origin; associated with, and perhaps a particular use of, Old French bagasse, Spanish bagazo, etc., refuse, trash, which is, again, prob. a variant (in Spanish) of bagage, baggage: see baggage and bagasse. But there are indications of two or more independent sources.
