reesetee You may indeed. Thanks! Oct 13, 2008
ofravens May I suggest hadeharia? Oct 12, 2008
reesetee Bilby, I can hear you. ;->
Rolig, thanks for those suggestions--added. We might as well include two of my favorite place names. :-) Jul 21, 2008
bilby I'm way out of your league, both of you. I just blumbled into this (ахуеть) while random-wording, thought it would suit Gesundheit! Appreciate your enlightening comments. Jul 16, 2008
rolig Thanks, Mia! Jul 15, 2008
mialuthien My knowledge of Russian grammar has deteriorated over the years, but I hear it spoken around me every day. I am quite certain that there is some degree of naughtiness involved in ахуеть (охуеть), and while I wouldn't consider it offensive, I wouldn't use it in "polite" society either. That said, I like this word, especially if it is said with typical Russian emphasis :) Jul 15, 2008
rolig Reesetee, my contribution to this wonderful list would be: kerfuffle (which admittedly is more of a pre-sneeze sound) and, if proper names are permitted, Schenectady and Poughkeepsie (with hats off to Dick Van Dyke). Jul 15, 2008
rolig Mia and Bilby, I've been out of touch from everyday colloquial Russian for about 15 years, so ахуеть is new to me (though I am very familiar with хуй!). Could one of you tell me how it is used? Is it really related to хуй or is it perhaps derived from the verb ахать/ахнуть ("to exclaim 'ach!'"), e.g. аховать (which is not in my dictionary, but if it did exist, it would be conjugated ахую, ахуешь, ахует ... ахуют - with only an accidental relationship with хуй)? Or is it a hybrid of the two? Jul 15, 2008
bilby You're right, but we don't have to tell reesetee! Jul 15, 2008
mialuthien Perhaps you should have also provided a translation of that word – 'хуй' in ахуеть is a taboo word for a male reproductive organ, even though ахуеть is just an exclamation indicting a surprised wonderment). But you probably already knew all that! :)
You've put ideas in my head. Now, whenever I hear a Russian person saying ахуеть, I'll be tempted to respond with "будьте здоровы!" (bless you). Jul 15, 2008
bilby How about ахуеть? It's a Russian verb whose pronunciation sounds like a-HOO-yet. Jul 15, 2008
reesetee Classics! How could I miss those? Apr 25, 2008
mollusque Issue! Tissue! Apr 25, 2008
bilby *katzenjammer!*

reesetee You're right, bilby--opening the list to all manner of German words would be like locking a person with a cat allergy into a room full of felines. It just isn't sporting.
That said, I'll take bergschrund, since I like the definition. (Also because I don't want chained_bear to come stomping through again.... :-P) But that's it! No more German sneeze-words! Enough!
Er...well, for now. Apr 9, 2008
ofravens bilby -- This is true, but what if we (and by we, I clearly mean reesetee, ahem) limit the inclusion of German words to those that actually have an accompanying definition in English? Of which bergschrund, delightfully, is one? Or not. Just a suggestion. :) Apr 9, 2008
gangerh The sweet toothache fairy suggested 'zahnschmerzen'. A Teutonic toothache, apparently. Apr 9, 2008
bilby No fair, almost all German words sound like sneezes ;-) Apr 9, 2008
ofravens Yep, me again: bergschrund! Apr 9, 2008
reesetee Heehee! Thanks, all!
You know, czar doesn't sound nearly as much like a sneeze as tsar. *pondering* Apr 8, 2008
pterodactyl I'm desperately trying to keep my giggling at the sub-audible level. It isn't working very well.
"Tsar", perhaps? If you pronounce the "ts", it's a short sharp sneeze. Apr 8, 2008
ofravens I thought of another one! Crevasse, maybe?
(Oh my god I can't even type that word without giggling. SO JUVENILE.) Apr 8, 2008
reesetee Added! Thanks, ofravens. Mar 26, 2008
ofravens May I humbly suggest the addition of ennui? With the emphasis on the second syllable, in particular? Mar 26, 2008
reesetee Kittens?? Unausgesetzt!
Excuse me; I'm allergic to cats. Mar 21, 2008
chained_bear Yay! Yay! *running in fields of daisies, with kittens* Thanks reesetee! Mar 21, 2008
reesetee *SIGH*
Okay, okay. Added.
*Additional, even more histrionic SIGH* Mar 21, 2008
chained_bear Fine! *stomps off*
Next time I sneeze (she called from far away where she stomped to), I'm going to SAY unausgesetzt. So there! Mar 21, 2008
reesetee Good grief! Are you sure that isn't a real sneeze?
Actually, I think I may forgo that one, c_b. I was trying for English words that sound like a sneeze--though admittedly, pshchtskrekhlkhdmkhrt breaks that rule with a flourish. :-) Mar 21, 2008
chained_bear unausgesetzt? Mar 21, 2008
reesetee Yes! How could I have missed it! Thanks, harvey. And I hope you don't really have a chainsaw. ;-) Nov 14, 2007
harveythechainsaw I was sure you would have kazoo! It is a gesundheit word that is also onomatopoeic. Nov 14, 2007
reesetee Thanks, guys. Segue is an odd one, to be sure, but I actually know someone who sounds like that, believe it or not. ;-) Feb 12, 2007
seanahan I agree with most of these, except for segue... Feb 12, 2007
chained_bear This is one of the most creative lists out there. --Escutcheon!-- Oh, excuse me please... Feb 12, 2007
