yarb Please email your words to idthewordienik13 at gmail dot com! Mar 13, 2013
deinonychus I guess I want to be in on this too, even though I might have a disadvantage since I haven't played before... Mar 8, 2013
frogapplause I'm in. Where do we send our word? Mar 8, 2013
blafferty Oh gosh, it's back! I haven't been on in months! Eek. Mar 7, 2013
ruzuzu I thought you were guessing that yarb's word will be brilliant. I think you're both brilliant, so this next game's going to be tough for me. Mar 6, 2013
gangerh Oh no! I've done the same as ruzuzu!
Except that you'd all have guessed me correctly as brilliant. Hah again! Mar 6, 2013
gangerh Brilliant, yarb.
I'm in. Put me down. Most people do. Mar 6, 2013
gangerh No 'zuzu - you're not supposed to put your word on here! Don't think I'd have got it anyway - wouldn't have put you down for a 'whatever'. Hah!
Mar 6, 2013
ruzuzu Me! Me! Pick me!
*ahem*
I mean... uh, that's cool. You know. Whatever. Mar 6, 2013
yarb OK, I'll do it! I'll be getting this show on the road pronto. All interested apply within. Ideas for a trophy? I'm loth to surrender my heavily tea-stained "molotov cocktail waitress" mug, but I'm sure I could arrange for a STF mug of the winner's choosing. Mar 6, 2013
gangerh Have emailed yarb asking him to let you know what he wants to happen. Mar 5, 2013
ruzuzu No word from his yarbishness (yet). Are you willing to host again? Mar 5, 2013
gangerh Hah! 'zu, you are a caution!
You're probably right if enough 'niks have the appetite.
While not written in stone it seems that the winner of the previous game is mooted as the runner of the next.
Perhaps yarb - the owner of the trophy special edition sweet tooth fairy coffee mug
"molotov cocktail waitress" - should therefore be sounded out.
But if no-'nik else wishes to run it, then I am happy to do it - gangerhnam-style of course.
Mar 1, 2013
ruzuzu Is it time to try this again? I have a tiara to defend. Mar 1, 2013
dontcry *taps foot* May 13, 2011
reesetee And for that "easy" one, chained, I thank you. From the bottom of my almost-in-last-place Wordienik heart.
*flings fuflun-decorated tiaras at fellow contestants* May 11, 2011
chained_bear It has taken me six days to read this page.
Last time I changed my answers at the last minute and got more wrong than if I hadn't changed any. So this time I refused to change any, and look! I am firmly in the middle of the herd.
*lends extra tiaras to everyone*
*dons crash helmet with specially-fitted tiara*
*fufluns around on a unicycle*
P.S. I chose wodge because it is a delightful word that makes me think of peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches. And what bear doesn't love those? But I also chose wodge because this game is too damn hard for small bear-brains and I wanted there to be at least ONE easy (I thought) entry. :) May 10, 2011
frogapplause How about a bouk instead? May 9, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Is a plastic tiara appropriate? May 7, 2011
dontcry *sits on the porch anxiously awaiting delivery of awesome prize for most wrong guesses* May 7, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Hooooooraaaaaaay! May 7, 2011
pterodactyl Hip hip... May 7, 2011
ruzuzu Hooray! May 7, 2011
pterodactyl Hip hip... May 7, 2011
hernesheir My thanks go 'round to gangerh and all who participated and commented in this annual amusement. May 7, 2011
ruzuzu *hugs pterodactyl* May 7, 2011
ruzuzu Hooray! May 7, 2011
pterodactyl Three cheers for gangerh and his hard work! Hip hip... May 7, 2011
pterodactyl *passes the gold tiara to yarb* May 7, 2011
pterodactyl *hugs ruzuzu* I'm happy to share second place with you, ruzuzu! Let's get matching silver tiaras! May 7, 2011
blafferty I'll have a ruzuzutbeer barrel. May 7, 2011
gangerh Make mine a pint of blafferty's irish stout. May 7, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Thanks g! It's been Great.
*hands 'zuzu tiara anyway* May 6, 2011
ruzuzu Thanks for all your hard work, gangerh. This has been super fun!
So does this mean yarb's buying us all a round at the Verbal Arms? *hopes there's no Clamato there* May 6, 2011
ruzuzu Yay, yarb! May 6, 2011
gangerh I see that there is no adjudication necessary following my blunder in the results analysis, merely an adjustment to the end result.
I applaud ruzuzu - she has accepted, with grace and aplomb, the fact that I failed to apply the same procedure to her listing her own word as I did to others. Purely an error on my part. I would hasten to add that ruzuzu was not seen as trying to gain an advantage by listing her own word, merely playing the game with spirit within the rules. As did some other entrants. I apologise for any grief that has been caused.
This fiasco has added irony as I sought to award ruzuzu none correct initially, based on her splendid spoof entry list late on, as a diversion to the fact that I would be announcing her valid entry as a joint winner. (Oh, and to keep dontcry company.) What a farce!
Still, it did add a whole menu of scenarios as is usual these days in competitive games, of misunderstanding, umbrage, controversy, dissension, incompetence, legal threats, etc. Huge fun really.
So the the final placings are
1st yarb (8)
2nd ruzuzu/pterodactyl (7)
4th sionnach (6)
5th blafferty/chainedbear/frindley/frogapplause/Wordplayer (4)
10th fbharjo/mollusque/PossibleUnderscore/reesetee (3)
14th hernesheir/Prolagus (2)
16th oroboros (1)
17th dontcry (0)
and therefore the Prize Mug is . . . I mean goes to . . yarb. I'll be in touch to arrange design, production, and despatch of this unique trophy, yarb.
Thank you all for being gentle with me.
May 6, 2011
dontcry Pish Posh! Break a leg, gang! May 5, 2011
ruzuzu No worries, gangerh. :-)
Oh! And I keep forgetting to mention how tricky sionnach was with those pronunciations. Hilarious! May 5, 2011
hernesheir How posh. May 5, 2011
gangerh Sorry all, but Stewards Inquiry will have to conclude tomorrow as have just been asked to rush off to play a posh man in a posh hotel with a posh wife in Coronation Street. Haven't been told yet whether the posh wife is mine or not. Hah! May 5, 2011
ruzuzu Awww--thank you, sionnach, but I'd probably be just as happy with a madeupical tiara. May 5, 2011
frogapplause @yarb. You're right! Last time several people thought you were the stripper, and this time sionnach was convinced that you were afraid of bodysnatchers (mortsafe). In the future, if a word looks like it's for yarb -- IT'S ME!!!!! May 5, 2011
dontcry Wait...seriously? Zero? May 5, 2011
sionnach *Makes note to shop for souvenir tiara for 'zuzu.*
(fortunately, a return trip to Versailles is planned, with my next visitor from back in the U.S.) May 5, 2011
oroboros Thanks gangerh...and to all the players; I feel all warm 'n toasty to be among such an erudite and rapscalious crew. w00t! May 5, 2011
blafferty I get that impression. May 5, 2011
reesetee But...sometimes he is a marsupial, isn't he? May 5, 2011
blafferty I put bilby as protean because he sometimes seems like a person and sometimes like a marsupial. May 5, 2011
yarb protean seemed appropriate for an actor - though in hindsight not as appropriate as playful.
Would like to hear the five accents pronouncing professor von schmartzenpanz. May 5, 2011
reesetee Congrats, all! And Possible, I join you in shame--before all was said and done, I changed four or five that turned out to be correct after all. Eeesh.
As for protean, I was attempting a riff on the What Is a Reesetee, Anyhow? goofiness. :-) (Also, it's printed on the t-shirt I was wearing when I emailed gangerh.)
*indiscriminately flings fufluns* May 5, 2011
ruzuzu Um, since yarb's getting the mug and next year's red herrings, I get the tiara, right? May 5, 2011
gangerh Mmmm. Interesting. I wouldn't have thought of protean for me. And if I had told you all at some time earlier what I am currently working on, then reesetee could have been accused of throwing in a cred herring of her own. I'm in rehearsals for the UK tour of a play 'The Interview - The Story of the Holocaust' in which I play 5 different character parts, requiring 5 different German accents.
But I think playful all-encompassing as it also covers teasing, performing as a childrens entertainer, my sporting activities, and it amuses me to amuse.
It's a revelation to me that I'm not seen as being a man of my word. Hah! May 5, 2011
sionnach This was really more fun than the proverbial barrel-o-monkeys. Kudos to gangerh for the exciting, Eurovision-style, nailbiting countdown. And those fiendishly effective cred herrings. And congratulations to yarb and ruzuzu and ptero!
I guess I will just have to console myself by buying some kind of tacky mug with the Eiffel Tower on it. Because I will be here in Paris for another 7 weeks. Not that I would ever gloat about it; no, not me! May 5, 2011
yarb I knew Century Dictionary (for some reason I'm loath to abbreviate this) would be your downfall, ruzuzu. I do like a game of scrabble although I'm long out of practice. May 5, 2011
frogapplause So true, yarb! I'll have to add mortsafe to my Tools of the Trade. May 5, 2011
ruzuzu And I never would have guessed od for yarb. Though it's a fantastic word (especially for Scrabble), I was sure it was one of the cred herrings. May 5, 2011
ruzuzu I know--I had him as protean because Cent. Dict. 3 had "An actor who plays a number of parts in one piece." May 5, 2011
yarb For what it's worth, I chose od because I like it and I thought short words would be in short supply. May 5, 2011
yarb Yes he did. And playful is another one I'm kicking myself over (I'm kicking my knees, in case you were wondering). Too clever by half. A bit like froggo's stripper in the last one. May 5, 2011
ruzuzu Haha--sorry yarb, it's all you! It'll be a good chance for you to torture us with cred herrings.
Gangerh did a great job this time. What fun! May 5, 2011
Wordplayer Since everyone's sharing, here was my strategy...
1. I matched yarb with od, because it just seemed like a fitting word. This was also how I correctly identified erinmckean.
2. Chained_bear commented on wodge, while oroboros commented on present. I'm surprised I'm the only one that correctly identified oroboros.
3. I chose greenhorn with the mistaken assumption that I would be the newest Wordie to enter the contest. However, Wordnicolina was, and that threw a lot of people off guard. Congrats P_U for seeing through the trompe l'oeil May 4, 2011
yarb Ruzuzu, I'll take the mug if you'll accept the Sisyphean task privilege of masterminding the next edition a year hence. Incidentally it was the looniness that gave your lunette away to me.
And I can't believe I didn't get distingue! Shoddy lapse. May 4, 2011
yarb I assumed a mortsafe was one of the many tools frogapplause uses to create frogapplause. May 4, 2011
blafferty Thanks, mollusque! Me too! May 4, 2011
mollusque Blafferty, I'm glad you're casting a shadow now! May 4, 2011
frogapplause The definition mentions a crescent, which is only a half moon, right? May 4, 2011
blafferty I matched Erin with calepinerienne because I did a desperate google search for the word and her name came up! Now, of course, the search results are flooded with other wordnik comments etc. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu Thanks, frogapplause. I'm actually only half Latvian... so... half moon? May 4, 2011
frogapplause Our little shiny Latvian moon. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu Well... I also liked lunette because I'm a bit looney sometimes. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu Oh, yarb can have the mug--if I hadn't put my own word in, he would have totally beaten me.
I'll arm-wrestle anyone for a tiara, though. :-) May 4, 2011
frogapplause I matched Erin with calepinerienne (and I was the FIRST to do so!) because the word looks classy and feminine, which I imagine Erin to be. Her dress-a-day project was something I considered.
I chose lunette for ruzuzu because it also appears feminine, but mostly I picked it because it was one of the first words gangerh listed ... and I knew ruzuzu was overeager to enter!
My other two correct guesses were just random good luck.
As for my own word, mortsafe: Wordies who were privy to some of the details of my childhood, might have guessed my need to feel safe. It also makes sense if one knows (from my blog) that I currently have a Russian bodyguard named Vlad. May 4, 2011
pterodactyl In case anyone's curious, I chose "distingue" for my word not because it describes me (it doesn't), but because I'm the only ITW player who lists it (in this list, based on this song from my childhood). May 4, 2011
dontcry *makes room for PU on the rhodos* May 4, 2011
pterodactyl Wooooooo! Third place!
*does the Dance of the Happy Pterodactyl*
Can I have a bronze tiara? May 4, 2011
yarb I've just realised that in true Eurovision-fashion, the winner of ID the 'nik is required to compere the next installment. Because this daunting challenge outweighs the allure of the mug, and because it would certainly prolong the agony entertainment, I am happy to continue with a playoff. May 4, 2011
blafferty *counts own correct answers*
*smiles happily*
*eats fuflun* May 4, 2011
gangerh We have a challenge.
I have reviewed the description of the game and can find no reason there that a player should not enter a word for themselves, as in fact a few did.
However, when analysing the entries, I worked on the premise that any entry against your own name did not count. Most such entries did not use submitted words and were merely entered for fun.
I did twice go through the spreadsheet eliminating "own words" as inadmissible, but obviously missed ruzuzu's lunette.
I am inclined to rule that as an E&OE situation, correct it, and score accordingly, with a new declaration of final places.
However, I will entertain representations via this page from any participant who wishes to make any within the next 24 hours.
I will then deliberate and conclude.
Sincerely
gangerh May 4, 2011
yarb *investigates emergency sources of umbrage* May 4, 2011
gangerh Stewards inquiry. May 4, 2011
yarb I mean the playoffs would be fun but I'm not giving up on that mug without exhausting every legal avenue first. May 4, 2011
yarb But hernesheir didn't get credit for his own word.
Recount please! May 4, 2011
ruzuzu If yarb had matched himself with his own word, he would have beaten me. May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Unless you count her own word. May 4, 2011
yarb Hang on a minute. As far as I can see, 'zuzu got these right: blafferty, erinmckean, fbharjo, frindley, PossibleUnderscore, seanahan, wordnicolina. It's seven, no? May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore If I had gone with my gut feeling, I would be sitting with a grand total of 10 correct.
Oh the shame!!
*joins dontcry in death* May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Do I get a prize for using 6 of the 7 cred herrings?
You have to admit, that's pretty impressive. May 4, 2011

yarb I demand a recount. *lawyers up* May 4, 2011

sionnach So I think I have 5 right, and if fbharjo is chrestomathic, maybe 6.
But is it enough for the win? And why in hell didn't I put prodigal for seanahan, like the voice in my head was telling me to?
But I have to go to bed now. May 4, 2011
frogapplause GIRL POWER!!! May 4, 2011
ruzuzu *bats eyelashes innocently*
*quietly takes notes about sionnach's views re former SSRs* May 4, 2011
sionnach What's Eurovision? Is it like American Idol?
It's got the same cheesiness factor. But the prestige of entire nations is at stake. Purists like myself prefer the old days before the breakup of the Soviet union added about a dozen new entrants.
The voting is notorious for countries voting either for their neighbors, or deliberately slighting ancient enemies. And Luxembourg always seems to have an inordinate number of votes, given that nobody actually lives there, and the whole country can be rented out for parties. (Or is that Liechtenstein?)
on edit: Oh, poor sweet innocent 'zuzu, I don't think there's much ambiguity there. May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Yeah- I went to bed last night just after the first statistic came out, disappointed that I was going to miss the results. Now I'm up again (after a very restless night dreaming of this game) and we're still not finished! May 4, 2011
ruzuzu I'm not sure--that's part of the suspense (for me, anyway). May 4, 2011
sionnach This is more long-drawn-out than the finale of "Top Chef, France". And that went on until midnight. It's 10:50pm here now, and I have to be in class by 9am tomorrow. He is tormenting us.... May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore I'm so angry! I had both seanahan as prodigal and blafferty as ascian before I changed it. That would have taken me to five definitely right.
Congratulations everybody!
Ruzuzu, is gangerh saying you got absolutely none right?
Edit: I think I'm misunderstanding what he said. I can see some that you guessed correctly.
Edit Edit: Hah! So no one guessed your word right.Sorry. My mistake. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu Exactly--if this were a real game show, right now there'd be some commercials for chia pets and the clapper. May 4, 2011

gangerh Time for a shower. Back soon. May 4, 2011
gangerh Another with 4 tied here is only one of 3 to get pterodactyl. blafferty also got chained_bear, frindley and erinmckean. Pretty good for a newbie. May 4, 2011
yarb sinistral was a tough one to assign; there were four or five possibilities. May 4, 2011
blafferty I chose mine for exactly the reason mollusque surmised. Clever creature. May 4, 2011
gangerh Also tied with 4, those being erinmckean, frindley, seanahan, and just one of 3 to get sionnach - is this an excuse for a wodge - it's chained_bear. May 4, 2011
yarb *applauds* May 4, 2011
ruzuzu Yay, frog! May 4, 2011
hernesheir I chose sinistral, an adjective, because I'm a southpaw, and only occasionally right. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu I've added lunette to my farriery list, but my favorite definition is Cent. Dict. number 14. May 4, 2011
gangerh Also with 4 right answers - seanahan, pterodactyl, chained_bear and the protean reesetee. It's frindley. May 4, 2011
blafferty *speechless* May 4, 2011
gangerh Tied with 4 correct - erinmckean, pterodactyl, seanahan, and lunette for ruzuzu is - let's hear it for the frog - frogapplause!! May 4, 2011
ruzuzu What's Eurovision? Is it like American Idol? May 4, 2011
gangerh The present oroboros was only identified correctly by this entrant, who also got erinmckean, chained_bear and was one of only two who got yarb right. 4 for Wordplayer. May 4, 2011
Prolagus Time to say that I chose slopseller because of my list (adding now!). May 4, 2011
yarb This is exciting isn't it? It's like Eurovision, as sionnach says, with all the high camp and none of the Balkanised political skulduggery. May 4, 2011
yarb I just looked up calepin. May 4, 2011
Prolagus In (old?) French, calepinerie apparently means "A true, just, and precise interpretation, or translation of every single word". (Cf. calepin) May 4, 2011
sionnach ooh, goody! I am above average!!! May 4, 2011
blafferty Oh my gosh, I got more than 3!
*swoons, wishing for hydrangeas* May 4, 2011
gangerh We have 4 tied with three correct IDs.
All 4 got calepinerienne from erinmckean. I'd love to know how because I couldn't find it anywhere but on wordnik and the only place it was listed was on this page.
In addition ...
fbharjo put hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophile together with Wordnicolina, and (perversely) od with yarb.
mollusque saw seanahan rightly as prodigal and blafferty rightly as ascian.
reesetee noticed how frindley has a fondness for the a-e ligature, and chained_bear's fondness for a wodge.
PossibleUnderscore probably overscores here because he got Prolagus down as a one-time slopseller and Wordplayer as the greenhorn that he is, being new to joining in here, and plays a French one. And he was the only one to get these two right. May 4, 2011
hernesheir Merci, merci. May 4, 2011
sionnach Le jury du Luxembourg donne deux votes a hernesheir et deux votes a Prolagus... May 4, 2011
hernesheir Isn't it rich, Prolagus, aren't we a pair? Only 2 correct. Gosh indeed. May 4, 2011
Prolagus Gosh. May 4, 2011
blafferty I got more than 2 right!
*dances jig*
My expectations were clearly set at just the right level. This gives me so much satisfaction. May 4, 2011
gangerh We have 2 tied with 2.
hernesheir was one of 4 to get the systematic mollusque and one of 3 to get the boggy sionnach.
Prolagus was one of 6 to mediæval the frindley and one half of those that got frogapplause and her mortsafe.
May 4, 2011
sionnach Oooh! This is like watching the results of the Eurovision Song Contest, except that the stakes are much higher.

blafferty Crap, I don't think my luck extends to chances that are less than 70% probability. May 4, 2011
gangerh Someone who singularly excelled - he only got one right but then again he was the only one to get her right, and the only one to get only one right. Hah! dontcry was correctly identified as queasy by oroboros, who proved to be resistant to the tears. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu Playful gangerh--I think you're the true winner. Aaaaaargh! :-) May 4, 2011
sionnach Well, yarb, I think this question comes up every year, and I believe the probability of getting none right approaches 1/e (where e is the base for natural logs) as n gets larger and larger. So the answer to your question is 1 - (1/e) = roughly 63.2% May 4, 2011
yarb Odds of at least one correct at random please, sionnach? May 4, 2011
yarb Oooh! That is frankly embarrassing. May 4, 2011

gangerh The results are in. Do not ring anything - it'll count for nothing and you may still be charged for it. May 4, 2011
blafferty *bites nails* May 4, 2011
gangerh 3 of you correctly employed the most number of words, 12 each. Which means you spotted 4 cred herrings out of 7. Well played dontcry, frindley, and frogapplause. Ah, but did you apply them correctly? May 4, 2011
Prolagus dontcry, how do we split the mug? May 4, 2011
gangerh 4 of you quite correctly equated leather-eared with hidelugged. bilby did send me a word, but it wasn't that one. That one started with me in honour of the marsupial that conducted the last ID game. May 4, 2011
ruzuzu I nominate yarb to make a horking list (regardless of whether any already exist). May 4, 2011
sionnach So, in other words, I was led down the garden path at every turn.
Come on, gangerh, time to post the results already! You're just playing with us now ......
Though, with an average of fewer than 4 correct identifications per entrant, maybe there is some hope, just by sheer chance? May 4, 2011
yarb Is there a list for hork-puns? If not, should there be? May 4, 2011
ruzuzu *whispers* The horking.... The horking.... May 4, 2011
yarb horking May 4, 2011
ruzuzu My second guess for dontcry was queasy because of all the... you know.... May 4, 2011
yarb I was suspicious of tear-resistant but it was a case of following the herd. I'd rather be wrong and have company than right and lonely. May 4, 2011
gangerh Your choices for dontcry are remarkable - 15 cred herrings and one correct ID. She always strikes me as a nice delicate character, so why there would be resistance to being torn . . . ? When she sent me her word she commented on the list something which could, I thought, have led you all to conclude that her word would be in the last 2 or 3 entered. So I gave her a hand with tear-resistant as a diversion. May 4, 2011
frindley So now the analytical suspense is really killing me… May 4, 2011
gangerh The most popular cred herrings were balsamaceous and emordnilap, both used 14 times each.
Which means that each one was only spotted by 3 entrants. May 4, 2011
gangerh The most popular word was calepinerienne which was used 17 times. The least popular was alexis used just 6 times. May 4, 2011
gangerh We have a total of 66 correct identifications spread across 17 entrants. May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Heh heh heh...
Ruzuzu got me though!
(well done) May 4, 2011
gangerh PussyGaloreBlunders also gave you his word agsinst his name. But he didn't give you his word that he wouldn't play that way. May 4, 2011
gangerh I have to revise the earlier statement about me being the only one not picked out correctly. My spreadsheet shows that the hernesheir apparent was not picked out by anyone else but himself. How cool is that? May 4, 2011
gangerh All cred-herrings were put to work, and some worked spectacularly well! May 4, 2011
gangerh A quick scan reveals a spooky happening straight away. It seems that all players were sussed out by at least one other player, with the exception of me.
But 16 of you applied my word to 11 others.
Wot! No-one sees me as playful? I'm always play-acting.
(Or was it a conspiracy?) May 4, 2011
gangerh Well, the results are tabulated and just need to do a doublecheck for accuracy of data entry and analysis can begin. May 4, 2011
blafferty The pleasure of one big wodge is hard to beat. May 4, 2011
PossibleUnderscore I'm feeling a bit queasy right now. Everyone seems so sure... May 4, 2011
Prolagus I forgot to say that my reason for Wordplayer's word is the same as mollusque. May 4, 2011
mollusque Here's my reasoning:
bilby was an ingenue last time around, so I thought that the goings on about the world might make him queasy at times.
blafferty has been on Wordnik for more than two years, but said very little until recently so ascian seemed appropriate.
chained_bear likes old stuff like mortsafes.
dontcry and erinmckean: I went for the obvious connections (not that they were immediately obvious) and hoped the words weren't gangerherrings.
fbharjo makes different connections than I usually would, which seems sinistral.
frindley: pandas are friendly looking.
frogapplause: frogs metamorphose, and so does frogapplause, which is protean.
gangerh: I judged he couldn't resist a STF, especially with all the double-think going around.
hernesheir: is balsamaceous because he likes adjectives and has studied plants.
oroboros: emordnilap, as he collects odd word patterns.
PossibleUnderscore: harlequin is purely a guess from the remaining unmatched words.
Prolagus: his sigh from the previous contest has escalated to an aaaaaaargh!.
pterodactyl: when airborne a pterodactyl is lugged around by its hide.
reesetee: an editor can be chrestomathic.
ruzuzu: definitely playful even if that's not her chosen word.
seanahan: prodigal is another pure guess.
sionnach: is learning French, which is distingue.
Wordicolina: Most recent Wordnik among the entrants, so a greenhorn.
Wordplayer: young word afficionados often start with a love of long words.
yarb: is often present when the conversation turns to him, even if he hasn't been commenting.
May 3, 2011
frindley I think we should allow gangerh the pleasure of one big wodge. May 3, 2011
fbharjo I don't stand under and understand wodges.......that would be od................. I am a playful, prodigal son of the prodigal father no pandarising and withstanding May 3, 2011
dontcry *rocks feverishly on porch in anticipation of specially designed coffee mug*
*feels certain to win*
*clenches* May 3, 2011
fbharjo the ball is in y'all's court
*no matter how sinistral the spin* May 3, 2011
fbharjo who balsamaceously presented chrestomathically correct, tear resistant systematic and queasy hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophiles..(emordnilapally).........(lacks action)
May 3, 2011
ruzuzu I suppose we could keep ourselves entertained by finishing hernesheir's story.... May 3, 2011
Wordplayer Wait, so did my last minute changes not count...I'm confuzzled...
Edit: ..And scared...because I just changed my answers before I read that the contest was over...*hides face in shame*
IM SORRY!
2nd edit: I might've just gotten more wrong though, because...normally your gut instinct is right May 3, 2011
pterodactyl Shall we now share our secret words, and our reasons for choosing them, or shall we wait for gangerh to divulge them all simultaneously in one big wodge? May 3, 2011
pterodactyl Yarb, I saw the same connection as you did, and I came very close to guessing "boggy" for sionnach, but then I changed my mind at the last minute and guessed "sinistral". Turns out he's "boggy" after all, which means I was wrong for the right reason, which is the inverse of being right for the wrong reason, which is much more satisfying than being wrong for the wrong reason. May 3, 2011
frindley I took the same line of thinking as ruzuzu when it came to yarb/bray/emordnilap. In other instances I matched words to people who'd listed/commented on them or made expressions of fondness (chained bear/wodge). As for the rest, my rationale doesn't bear scrutiny. May 3, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Oh no! I missed the closing hour!
:(
Oh well. Looking back I would have gotten even more wrong if I changed anything.
*hides face in shame* May 3, 2011
hernesheir A hidelugged harlequin, a sinistral slopseller, and a playful panda walk into a bar and present themselves to the greenhorn barkeep named Alexis, who stands behind the fortress of her/his lunette-shaped counter.
"A pint of your best grog!", shouts the panda, who happened to be in a most mediaeval mood. "What, no shoots and leaves?", asked the chrestomathic tap-puller.
you help finish the tale, or joke...
May 3, 2011
reesetee Mr. Boggy: I swear by the avian gods that I typed all those lame guesses myself. Not a bird's claw in sight. Can I help it if cats' paws are too fluffy for keyboards?
Signed,
R.T. Distingue May 3, 2011
ruzuzu Is anyone balsamaceous? It's not me--though I do love the balmy words. May 3, 2011
yarb Ha ha! I had sionnach as boggy due to a tenuous Irish - "bog Irish" connection (not that he is any such thing - purely a semantic connection)... May 3, 2011
blafferty I went through each word and noted who had listed it, listed it most, or commented on it most. Then the rest was guesswork. May 3, 2011
ruzuzu Oh! Sionnach! I'd even seen your "frogblog" list, but I didn't make the connection.
And Pro... don't you think the Century Dictionary definition for lunette is lovely? I thought it was so lovely that I'd used it as my fourth WotD. May 3, 2011
ruzuzu That wodge was the worst--there's a great discussion between chained_bear and reesetee about it, but I think it also showed up in one of pterodactyl's comments on the feedback page. I share Pro's thoughts about the mollusky nature of sinistral. Hidelugged seemed like leather-earred, which made me think of Mr. Marsupial... but I'm not sure whether he'd be that obvious. And yarb's name is not a palidrome but it does make a word when you read it backward, so that's why I matched him with emordnilap.
Edit: Lord help me. Yarb and bray might seem, in my mind, to be the same word, but they're really, really not. I'm such a braying ass. Sigh.
Edit of previous edit: No... emordnilap really would be okay. Emordnilap is a different word when it's read from back to front. Jeepers. Now I'm psyching myself out, and the game is already over! May 3, 2011
sionnach Well, if frindley isn't alexis, bury me in a bog and call me sphagnovulpine. Y'all are obviously not reading my frogblog, because if you were, you'd know I was staying in the Marais, which means the marsh. I am a boggy froggy right now.
All my other choices were pure guesswork and/or following ze herd. Except for tear-resistant, which may be a very clever cred herring indeed. And heartstringplucker, which had enough of the STF about it to remind one of gangerh. mediaeval was tempting for chained_bear, but seemed too obvious.
Installs self next to telephone to await notification of being declared winner, munching on cupcakes and fufluns... May 3, 2011
yarb First thing I did was try to identify the seven (c)red-herrings, i.e. the seven words I thought most likely to have been thrown into the mix by gangerh.
Then there were two or three match-ups that I was certain of, so I filled those in. Then it was a case of eliminating all the "no-way!" combinations and seeing what was left that worked. I also took account of other people's choices, going with the mass of opinion in a couple of cases where I might otherwise have chosen differently. May 3, 2011
Prolagus I can tell you why I chose some of the words:
dontcry - aaaaaaargh! because she joined late and nearly missed the game.
fbharjo - alexis because, like nearly all fbharjo's comments, it doesn't make any sense to me.
frindley - mediæval because of her preference for the æ spelling.
frogapplause - mortsafe because I know she has one.
gangerh - heartstringsplucker because he wanted to fool us.
hernesheir - od because it's a simple word with an odd (no pun intended) meaning.
mollusque - sinistral because... he's a mollusk.
reesetee - wodge because it sounds madeupical but it's not.
ruzuzu - ascian because of the lovely CD definition.
seanahan - present because he is, despite the lack of activity.
sionnach - hidelugged because either it is a word, but I couldn't find it, or he fooled me again. May 3, 2011
sionnach I still think there should have been a rule preventing Wordnikoyennes who are really just birds trained to hunt and peck on the keyboard (you know who you are Madame R.T. Distingue) from passing themselves off as, you know, real virtual people.
(Written with the bitterness of someone who has wasted countless hours trying to teach Boris and Natasha to type with their little kitty-paws -- they always end up just chewing their little kitty-booties to shreds.) May 3, 2011
ruzuzu Phew! So is now the time to share our strategy and try to figure out who's who before the official results come in? For instance, did anyone notice that I listed sneezy for both chained_bear and Wordplayer? May 3, 2011
gangerh Game is now closed.
Watch this space. May 3, 2011
blafferty Gaaaaaaah! May 3, 2011
sionnach Would it help anybody's decision to change anything, or not, if I told you that a brief scan of entries revealed that all of you were mostly wrong, or mostly right? Mwahahahaha!
No, it would not. May 3, 2011
ruzuzu I'm sticking with what I've got.
I think. May 3, 2011
PossibleUnderscore Oh bugger. That means I have to remember to get up just before 2AM to make my last minute changes.
:(
May 3, 2011
gangerh Game closes today in about 9 hours at 5pm GMT/UTC. May 3, 2011
ruzuzu Now yarb has me changing my ming. I'm editing my list. Again. May 2, 2011
dontcry aaaaaaargh!
*sniff* May 2, 2011
reesetee *playfully accepts dontcry's mediæval coupon and hands her a balsamaceous panda-shaped wodge* May 2, 2011
gangerh Will soon be announcing the end of the game. When I do I'll make it a few hours forward so that last minute entries - and alterations - can be made.
Would it help anybody's decision to change anything, or not, if I told you that a brief scan of entries revealed that all of you were mostly wrong, or mostly right? Mwahahahaha! May 2, 2011
ruzuzu Yaaaaaaarb! Now I'm third-guessing. Dang it! May 2, 2011
blafferty Wow, this list has a festival-like atmosphere this morning.
If fuflun were a verb, I think there would be either arm-flinging or unicycles involved. I say unicycle because I am picturing a bear fuflunning all around, just because, chained_. May 2, 2011
dontcry *presents coupon to ressetee for slop* May 2, 2011
chained_bear *fufluns all around, just because* May 2, 2011
sionnach Ping! That was the sound of yarb changing his "ming", muffled by the walls of his mortsafe, natch! May 2, 2011
yarb Based on ruzuzu's late change, I've made two of my own. May 2, 2011
frindley Oh no, I just thought of the perfect word for me!

hernesheir Didn't mean to leave yarb off the list! Now I'm all queasy. May 2, 2011
ruzuzu Umbrage! Hernesheir didn't list anything for yarb. May 2, 2011
sionnach * hugs Prolagus right back *

I started out methodically, using the spreadsheets, looking up words, and generally being systematic*. That didn't last long. Most of these are wild, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey stabs in the dark.
*Not a hint regarding the word "systematic". Apr 27, 2011
pterodactyl *applauds frindley's knowledge of Andrew Clement books* Apr 27, 2011
frindley This is infinitely more difficult than I anticipated. I think I shall need to change my chosen word. How about stumped?
Anyway, my paltry effort, allocation of wild guesses aided somewhat by the use of a spreadsheet and a late swap which I shall probably regret:

ruzuzu Frogapplause, did he skip just your name, or your name and the word that describes you? *bats eyelashes and attempts to look innocent* Apr 26, 2011
frogapplause oroboros included himself but skipped me!!! All manner of umbrage is taken. Apr 26, 2011
gangerh In the event of a tie, 'zuzu, I propose a playoff. I will ask all losing entrants who want to help in the playoff to select a word that they consider applies to/describes each tied wordnik, one for each of them.
The tied wordniks will have a couple of days or so to match these words with all tied wordniks, including themselves.
Any further ties can be played off in the same manner until we have a winner.
Hope that explains what I'm trying to communicate. And also, now I've thought of that, I rather hope we'll have a tie!
(Or we could just count the number of letters in the words that they got right in the first place.) Apr 26, 2011

ruzuzu Sionnach, I do not mean to pry, but you don't by any chance happen to have six fingers on your right hand, do you? Apr 25, 2011
ruzuzu Now, a clever wordnik would put the word into his own list, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the slopseller in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the slopseller in front of me. Apr 25, 2011

And anyone with a Wordnik account can join in.
The aim is for you to identify Wordniks based upon a single word that they have chosen that they consider applies to/describes them.
The Wordniks you must identify with the words in the above list are:
bilby
blafferty
chained_bear
dontcry
erinmckean
fbharjo
frindley
frogapplause
gangerh
hernesheir
mollusque
oroboros
PossibleUnderscore
Prolagus
pterodactyl
reesetee
ruzuzu
seanahan
sionnach
Wordnicolina
Wordplayer
yarb
Each of the above-listed Wordniks has confidentially emailed me their chosen word which now appears in this list.
Please enter the competition by submitting a comment in which you link the Wordnik with their identifying word. You may also discuss the reasoning behind your choices if you wish.
Yes, I know there are more words in the list than there are entrants. They’re called cred herrings. And some are less cred than others. Hah!
Be thankful that I didn’t throw a cred herring into the list of entrants – I did consider it.
Remember there’s a prize for the most correct matches!
Note: you do not have to be listed as a Wordnik-to-be-identified to enter. Anyone with a Wordnik account can join in. Just go right ahead!
You have at least 7 sleeps before a closing soon warning but you may post your solution as soon as you wish.

sionnach "do not comment on your intentions anywhere on this site as most of the words submitted have been published and the sharper participants will pick up on the fact that your word is in the last few listed".
I'm betting all of the sharper participants have seen "The Princess Bride" and will get totally bogged down in their own mental reverse-reverse-reverse psychology games if they attempt to follow that line of reasoning. Or do I mean reverse-reverse-reverse-reverse psychology games?

gangerh Still room for two maybe three more entrants.
To take part you simply choose a word that you feel applies to/describes you and confidentially submit it to me for me to post anonymously on this list. Then, when I feel we have enough entries, I publish the Wordnik names of all entrants. Then everyone gets a few days to match up the submitted words with the Wordnik.
There is a prize to go along with the breathtaking honour of winning.

Thank God for Gmail! :-) Apr 15, 2011
gangerh Thanks, sionnach, absolute sense, and that's exactly what I did that didn't work for me. Apr 15, 2011
sionnach I had to fiddle with it for a while, but eventually what seems to work is to go to the list in question, then find its exact address in your browser and copy that exactly into the href= part of the relevant HTML syntax. I think the reason that this works, where other possibilites don't, is that Wordnik replaces spaces in the list names with hyphens, as well as possibly making some other changes. If that makes sense ... Apr 15, 2011
gangerh I thought that, bilby, so I tried it in Comments and still it wouldn't work for me.
