ME, non, noon, from Old French (and F.) non = Spanish no = Portuguese não = Italian no, from Latin non, Old Latin nenum, nenu, noenum, noenu, not, orig. ne oinom (ne ūnum), from ne, not, + oinom, ūnum, accusative of oinos, ūnus = English one. See none, which is cognate with L, non, and with which rare Middle English non, adv., seems to have merged.
