roseandivy Sionnach,
I just wasn't paying attention at the time -- I get it now. :) Actually, I really wasn't paying attention - my list is only about collecting -ling words, because I think they are adorable. Feb 8, 2009
sionnach I've deleted ceiling and stotting from this list, mafeking as well, because - as qroqqa pointed out - it's only visually that it doesn't fit. In fact, it is singularly unsuited for this list, as the name of the town Mafeking actually spawned the verb 'to maffick'. Jan 26, 2009
qroqqa Mafeking doesn't fit here, except visually. Jan 9, 2009

mollusque Um, sionnach, you might never have ceiled or stotted, but some of us probably have. Apr 9, 2008
gangerh Does 'never landing' work for you?
As in 'I don't know, I've never never landed'. Apr 9, 2008
sionnach @roseandivy: The criterion for inclusion is that the apparent past tense obtained from the 'verb stem' preceding the 'ing' should not be legitimate.
Thus, fling doesn't belong on the list because, in answer to the question: "How do you like fl-ing?", the response "I don't know, I've never fled" actually makes sense. Similarly, the legitimacy of 'bred' and 'bled' as past tense formats rules out 'bring' and 'bling'.
Obviously, any -ing word obtained directly from a verb is ruled out a priori. Thus, for instance, I wouldn't include 'dwindling', as you have done on your list.
Don't know if that makes sense, or is just overly convoluted. Apr 9, 2008
roseandivy Oh, drat it all! And here I thought I was first to this idea with my list.
P.S. What's your rules for this list, then, sionnach? Apr 9, 2008

sionnach Contrary to what one might think, bling cannot be placed on this list. Nor can fling or bring. Nov 15, 2007
