Etymologies (3)

Toggle American Heritage etymologies American Heritage Dictionary (1)

  1. Middle English candi, crystallized cane sugar, short for sugre-candi, translation of Old French sucre candi and Old Italian zucchero candi, both from Arabic sukkar qandīy : sukkar, sugar + qandīy, candied (from qand, cane sugar, probably from Dravidian kaṇṭu, lump).

Toggle Century etymologies Century Dictionary (2)

  1. from French candi (also sucre candi, where candi is regarded as past participle of the verb), from Italian candi (zucchero candito) = Spanish candi, azucar candi, or cande, = Portuguese candi, candil (assucar candi), from Arabic qandī, made of sugar, from qand, qanda (sokker qanda) = Persian qand, sugar, sugar-candy, from Hindustani khānd, sugar, prob. from khand, a piece (cf. khandat, khandit, broken), from Sanskrit khanda, a piece, a portion (cf. khandava, sweet-meats), from √ khand, break.
  2. The verb seems to appear in English before the noun, but is due to the noun: F. candir, from Italian candire, to make into candy, from candi: see candy, n.
