Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia
- n. A territorial and administrative division of the old Germanic state which included several villages or communities, and seems to have corresponded at first to the hundred, but later to a division more nearly resembling a modern county. The word still forms part of several place-names, as Oberammergau in Bavaria.
