Of course, not, Pro. Adding it here makes us all look at the word in a new way, and that's the whole point, right? :)
  • almost 2 years ago Prolagus said
Chained, I added bicycle here, hope you don't mind. I know it's a word you learn very early in your life, but still... an unexpected pronunciation!
  • over 2 years ago chained_bear said
Oh skipvia! I knew I saw a list like this more recently than this ancient, decrepit one. I'm sorry, I'll go post a link to your list on that other page we were talking about. As soon as I figure out what it was. Oh yeah, segway.
  • over 2 years ago skipvia said
There are a bunch of these on my Say What? list, but I'm too lazy to move most of them over. Added a few, though.
  • almost 3 years ago reesetee said
Haha! Father of Debride? That's hilarious!
  • almost 3 years ago arby said
When I see "debride" I immediately put a "Father of" in front of it to get exactly the wrong pronunciation. (Which, BTW, should go on a list of words with "unexpected spelling" because I ALWAYS want to spell it "pronounciation".)

    PS No one expects pronunciation!

    What about detritus?

I guess I thought of paraphernalia because people often pronounce it pehr-uh-fuh-neel-yuh. Or maybe that's just how my misguided ear has heard it =/
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
I don't know about paraphernalia, though it's a great word anyway. Circuit? Hmm... maybe. But then would I also have to add circuitous?
  • over 3 years ago valse said
One of my favorite words as spelling goes: paraphernalia. And perhaps circuit?
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Oh, don't cross screendoor. That is one baaad screendoor. *shudder*
  • over 3 years ago uselessness said
I don't think screendoor would let me, anyway.
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Just don't pee on that battleship. I hear it's illegal.
  • over 3 years ago uselessness said
That's about as funny as a screen door on a battleship.
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
Yeah! Pwned! I'm the big man, beatin' up a screen door!
    And STAY out! Foo!
  • over 3 years ago screendoor said
    *shudder*
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
uselessness, not on your birthday. :) Consider the screen door warned to stay the hell away from your ass. You hear that, screen door?
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Screen doors hitting asses? Man, I've missed a lot!
  • over 3 years ago uselessness said
Oh crap, chained_bear, do we know each other? Shall I apply that slamming screen door to my own behind?
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
*slams screen door onto litigious's ass*
  • over 3 years ago abraxaszugzwang said
litigious, litigious, litigious, neener neener neener!
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
I guess it shouldn't be added, because
    1) it cannot compare with sarsaparilla, colonel, or suite,
    2) it's my list, and
    3) the person who mispronounced it yesterday ticks me off on a regular basis, and the word's inclusion here will needlessly remind me of that person, so for the collective sanity, it should not be included.
I hereby banish "litigious." Get out, and don't let the screen door hit your ass.
  • over 3 years ago uselessness said
    I concur.
  • over 3 years ago abraxaszugzwang said
So shouldn't it be added since the pronunciation is unexpected?
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
Well, that's why I didn't add it to this list.

It does look like it should be "LIT-i-gus," though, in the same way that "pimiento" looks like it ought to be "pih-MEN-toh."
  • over 3 years ago abraxaszugzwang said
yeah, I actually prefer that pronunciation, c_b. It's so much more fun to say.
  • over 3 years ago uselessness said
For what it's worth, that's how litigious looks.
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
Yesterday I heard someone pronounce "litigious" as "LIT-ig-ous." Not only accenting the wrong sylLAble, but using a hard G sound.
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Unfortunately, I think people would slap me if I tried to pronounce it that way, correct or not.

    Hey, how about sergeant?
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
true... unexpected spelling... The OED says it's supposed to be pronounced with a "y" sound rather than just "pi-men-to," the way most people (of my acquaintance) say it. Velly intellesting.
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Pimiento, perhaps, since you don't ever hear that "i"?
  • over 3 years ago seanahan said
I looked through it, but I guess I should have sorted alphabetically first! :)
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
Thanks seanahan--it's already on the list though! :)

  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
    Debride. Gross meaning, strange pronunciation.
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
    How 'bout suite?
  • over 3 years ago palooka said
    Sarsaparilla is a great example.
  • over 3 years ago chained_bear said
    Thanks seanahan!
  • over 3 years ago seanahan said
Along the lines of boatswain you have coxswain.
  • over 3 years ago reesetee said
Worcestershire. But then you're getting into British pronunciation, I suppose.
