pterodactyl Hi Ru2013! Some of these words have the "y" sound in some dialects but not in others. In my American dialect, "duke" does not have the "y" sound, but in a British dialect, it does. See the comments below for more. :-) May 16, 2013
Ru2013 I really appreciate the existence of this list! You have no idea. However, some of these words are not long u pronounced yu, but are instead the variant vowel sound long oo as in flute or rude. Duke for instance doesn't have the y when pronounced.

yarb Ha ha - well I'm afraid I bust my microphone, otherwise I'd have recorded a sentence incorporating all those words. But most speakers of British English should be able to oblige you - at least those who haven't spent too long in North America. I think the slip from "yu" to "oo" in words like stupid is one of the first aspects of a UK accent to get morphed. Tuna for example I'm just starting to pronounce "toona". Sep 21, 2008
