Etymologies (2)

Toggle American Heritage etymologies American Heritage Dictionary (1)

  1. Middle English las, probably of Scandinavian origin.

Toggle Century etymologies Century Dictionary (1)

  1. from Middle English *lasse, lysse (rare); perhaps contr. from Welsh llodes, feminine of llawd, a lad: see lad. The word is usually explained, in its modern form (the Middle English form being hitherto unnoticed), as a contr. of laddess; but laddess is an affected form, rare, and not found before the 18th century. Lass is now regarded as simply the feminine of lad.
