This is an experiment in public lists--something I've been thinking about for some time. The goal is to create a collection of short, powerful, evocative words.

This is an open list. Anyone can contribute, and I will not police the entries. I'm starting the list with one word, and we'll see where it goes.

Rules for adding words:

1. No more than five letters
2. No more than two syllables

Comments on the words that you add would be most appreciated.

  • ry I love this list. What's interesting is how unsubjective these are. Very few of them do not seem to have the "powerful, evocative" property. (On a collaborative list I might have expected otherwise.) Dec 8, 2012

  • uselessness Good point. I intentionally added a lot of negative words because the list description seemed to imply it wanted them. I guess by "powerful" I was interpreting it as destructive power. It's not that I was having a "tough day" yesterday, and I hope you're not reading anything into my psyche by those choices. If you want me to add a bunch of positive words for karmic balance, it's not a problem. ;-) Dec 20, 2007

  • skipvia I'm struck by the preponderance of aggressive or negative words on this list (e.g., spite, anger, lust, kill, vile, scum, fury). Certainly powerful words, though. Dec 20, 2007
