reesetee Good one, thanks! Jan 30, 2013
ry ricin? Jan 26, 2013
reesetee Come to think of it, that's another list idea.... Aug 30, 2012
goodkitten K Aug 30, 2012
reesetee Hi goodkitten. Hmm...don't know about ackee. If it's poisonous, wouldn't it be just as bad as it sounds? :-) Aug 30, 2012
goodkitten Is ackee acceptable? Aug 24, 2012
reesetee I agree, sionnach. Probably a list-owner error. Good catch! :-) Apr 12, 2011
sionnach Why is spizzerinctum on this list? It seems like it would be a better candidate for the "not quite as bad as they sound" list.
Just sayin' Apr 12, 2011
reesetee Eew x 2. Added, thanks. Apr 12, 2011
ruzuzu chalkstone Apr 11, 2011
ruzuzu cruentation Aug 24, 2010
madmouth other way around. that is, I brought it here when I realized it was obsolete and thus inappropriate for DoOT--then I poked through the Dictionary itself. I think "fluffer" found "hardness inspector" for me by some spiritual pathway Jun 5, 2009
yarb Hardness inspector made you think of that, didn't it? Jun 5, 2009
madmouth the occupation known as fluffer? Jun 5, 2009
reesetee Nomination accepted. :-) May 20, 2009
madmouth I nominate galantine May 14, 2009
reesetee I think ague sounds just as bad as it is. :-) Nov 25, 2008
sionnach How about lant? grogblossom? resurrectionist? theomastix? Nov 24, 2008
whichbe Stop agueing 'em on. Nov 24, 2008
mollusque Better ague than plague? Nov 24, 2008
whichbe ague Nov 24, 2008
reesetee Culex is a good one! But mollusque, I think I have to add kumquat to the "Not Quite As Awful As They Sound" list. :-) Sep 29, 2008
mollusque Reesetee, what do you have against kumquats? Sep 27, 2008
chained_bear Culex? Sep 27, 2008
reesetee Mostly sadists, I'd imagine. Oct 14, 2007
chained_bear Bloody hell, who THINKS of this stuff?! *is mad that anyone ever did this to another person*
EDIT: I should have put this comment on the word page, not the list page. Whoops! *moves it there* Oct 13, 2007
reesetee Most definitely added. *shudders* Oct 13, 2007
sionnach scaphism might be a candidate for this list. Like in that T.S. Eliot play. Oct 13, 2007
sionnach not so clear that apoptosis, sometimes referred to as 'programmed cell death', though this definition bothers some researchers, belongs on this list. Because one consequence of apoptosis shutting down is uncontrolled cell proliferation, or by its more familiar name, cancer. So, maybe apoptosis is a good thing, in the general scheme of things. Feb 28, 2007
reesetee Good one, trivet. Thanks! Feb 28, 2007
trivet rubella? Feb 28, 2007
reesetee Yes. Yes it does. Feb 16, 2007
chained_bear Oh, reesetee? Sionnach mentioned a merkin on the other list... maybe it goes here too? Feb 16, 2007
chained_bear Oops... should not have assumed anyone's gender. Sorry about that... Feb 16, 2007
reesetee Thanks, you guys! All added. Funny, I was sure I'd added bastinado earlier, but no. As for auto-da-fe, it always puts me in mind of a funny little European sports car.... Feb 16, 2007
sionnach This is a great list. Sionnach is the Irish word for a fox (as opposed to, say, a vixen); a close relation to strappado would be bastinado, also less pleasant than the name might imply. Feb 15, 2007
chained_bear Sionnach has some great words on her list that should go on this one: strappado and auto-da-fe. Sound great, don't they? UH-UH. Feb 15, 2007
reesetee Actually, I always thought that sounded like a fruity dessert. ;-) Feb 14, 2007
chained_bear Beriberi! Doesn't sound bad at all, does it? Feb 14, 2007
reesetee Thanks, palooka--I agree with you on all, but I just can't bring myself to put klismaphilia on the list. Forgive me. ;-) Feb 13, 2007
palooka I wish coprolalia & comedogenic had different meanings - really beautiful words. stercoraceous is a good one as is klismaphilia. Personally, I suffer from idioglossia. Feb 13, 2007
reesetee Oooh, nice. Added. Feb 13, 2007
chained_bear You know, ebola is a very nice-sounding word, if you don't know what it means. Feb 13, 2007
reesetee Oh, I don't know. You think hernia sounds nicer than it is? Hmmm....I'll have to think on this one. Er, I mean, stand up and think about it.
Anyway, you're free to start any list you want! Doesn't feel like a competition to me. :-) Feb 9, 2007
chained_bear I came across another one you might like. Hernia. But don't feel you have to add any more. I just didn't want to start a competing list. Feb 9, 2007
reesetee Added! Feb 8, 2007
chained_bear Salmonella! What a pretty word for such a disgusting thing... Feb 6, 2007
reesetee Noted. I do so like the word thrip. Feb 5, 2007
chained_bear You know, it isn't as sexy as the words already on this list, but thrips suck when they infest your favorite plants. Feb 5, 2007
reesetee Oh, catheter. Excellent. Ouch. Feb 5, 2007
chained_bear I am making a pain in the tochus of myself, I realize, but I keep finding words that would seem to fit well on this list. And I wouldn't presume to make a copycat list, so I'll just keep suggesting instead...
Requiem? It sure is a purty-sounding word, till you find out what it means.
And I agree, catheter hurts just to hear it. I'd venture it's creatively onomotopoetic, even. Feb 4, 2007
seanahan Well, I now believe that gleet is my new most painful word, surpassing catheter. Feb 4, 2007
reesetee Eeew. It's on! Feb 4, 2007
chained_bear I found one you might like.
gleet: Slimy matter; sticky or greasy filth. Or, A morbid discharge of thin liquid from a wound, ulcer, etc., specifically from the urethra.
Feb 4, 2007
chained_bear Night-soil? Wait... maybe that does sound as bad as it is. Feb 2, 2007
chained_bear Smallpox! It sounds like a joke, and it really isn't.
Feb 2, 2007
chained_bear How about pulpatoon? Feb 2, 2007
reesetee You've been working too hard. You're gonna have a prolapse! Feb 1, 2007
chained_bear You know what's funny, I was telling people at work, "there's this site called Wordie? And someone made this list called "Worse than they sound," and another one that's something like "Not as bad as they sound," and they're so great, you should go read them!"
Then I realized--uh... the person who invited me to this site is the one who made them. DUH. Feb 1, 2007
