This quickly got bigger and weirder than originally intended, so now it's housing terms that relate to the study of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures.   • chained_bear Thanks mollusque. As I said, I'm going to sort stuff out later. Right now I'm just dumping them into placeholder lists. :) It did occur to me to sort them by geologic time periods (I noticed you have a list of these--cool!), but I'm debating whether to use tags for that purpose instead. I like the idea of clicking on "Cretaceous" and coming up with a list of plants, dinosaurs, and other animals. And the tags could work well to cross-reference stuff on different lists, rather than listing them by eon. I'm still thinking about what I want to do. :)

    Edit: I should have mentioned that none of my list titles or organization (at least on this subject) are permanent.

    Meanwhile, I'm sure learning a lot. I'll have to wear earplugs so it doesn't all leak out. Aug 31, 2008

  • reesetee Gosh, c_b, I didn't realize that listing dinosaurs and other extinct creatures could bring on a bout of cursitis. I'll have to watch myself if I start listing prehistoric birds. ;-) Aug 30, 2008

  • mollusque Well, I noticed that Dinosaurology encompassed all of paleontology, and that your other lists weren't going to solve that, especially "Not a Dinosaur", which is rather broad. But then I have lists called Biology and Geology.

    You might want to limit Dinosaurology to Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous beasties that dinosaurs might at least have encountered. Aug 30, 2008

  • chained_bear Thanks mollusque! That will come in handy. I am trying to keep the "invalid" names from creeping in, though I'm sure there are some there now, and I have no intention of keeping up with current trends in paleontology and updating my lists in the future. Though given what John called my obsessive completism, I probably will. God*$#@it.

    You know there are a few other lists I'm working on, right? Including Dinosaurs, Pterosaurs, Ichthyosaurs, and the temporarily-named Not a Dinosaur.

    All this stuff will get sorted out eventually. I even made placeholder lists for when I figure out how the f&%$ to sort the go%#@*#ed mother%@*$ers. Aug 30, 2008

  • mollusque Try dinosaur genera, for 1181 names, including some no longer in use. And how about 1327 generic names ending in -saurus? Some are lizards or fish or other non-dinosaurians. Aug 30, 2008

  • mollusque More than 95% of the creatures that have ever lived are prehistoric. And there are more than 800 genera of dinosaurs alone, not counting birds, which are just feathered dinosaurs. Aug 30, 2008
