About

Words that have only one of the vowels. On this list I include only words with at least three vowels. When I first started the list, if a word had several forms, I generally listed only the one with the most vowels (for example, "deepened" rather than "deepen", "deeper" or "deepest"). Then I started including the shorter forms after adding tags to view words by number of vowels: aaa, aaaa, aaaaa, aaaaaa; eee, eeee, eeeee, eeeeee, eeeeeeee; iii, iiii, iiiii, iiiiii, iiiiiii; ooo, oooo, ooooo, oooooo, ooooooo, oooooooo; uuu, uuuu; uuuuu, uuuuuu; and yyy, yyyy, yyyyy.

  • mollusque Hi Wordplayer, both spellings are used. Online, nadaswaram is about 10 times more common than nagaswaram. In print (judging from Google Books), which is a proxy for having some editorial or copyediting input, the opposite pattern occurs: nagaswaram leads nadaswaram about 8 : 5. In the most reliable sources (judging from Google Scholar), they're in a virtual dead-heat. I've added nadaswaram. Apr 30, 2011

  • mollusque Hi Bilby! Once upon a time I downloaded a circa 300,000 word list (from a site I can't find online anymore), and put it in a database where I do pattern searches. Then I look up the words I don't know, because the list is dirty (typos, and verb forms that seem not to exist), and of course find others words along the way, usually in MW3 or OED2. Dec 15, 2007
